This place is perfect for a quick Japanese food fix. I'm a sucker for Japanese, so when this place was recommended to me it was not very long before I decided to try.
Sunny Blue has a variety of omasubi (rice balls) to try and all with great pricing ($3-4each). Since I couldn't stuff my face with all of them, I narrowed down my choices to the Spicy Salmon and Sunny Blue curry chicken omasubis--I'm pretty sure I'm spelling that incorrectly. They were both very tasty and made fast! I personally could do spicier, but they had a good kick alone.
I still felt a little hungrier after those two balls. I decided to try something different on the menu and went with the corn chowder. The gentleman making the food said it was really good, thick and creamy. I was very disappointed when it came out very watery. No creamy or thick at all! You can't call something chowder and it be watery. I would not get this or recommend to someone again. Also, it is $5! Not worth it and how does it cost more than a rice ball???
There is metered parking right out front. Limited seating inside. Great...
Read moreWent here yesterday for the first time with friends. I was told it was an awesome onigiri shop and thus was interested. The place had a few people but it was not very busy by any means. I ordered the miso beef, miso mushroom and the monthly special A5 Wagyu. Service was quick and everything was quick. The miso beef was okay. The miso mushroom was delicious.
The A5 Wagyu… holy mother of god. My partner and I split it and honestly regretted getting it. It was horrendously salty and overpeppered. Our mouths burned from the over abundance in black pepper. EVEN THE RICE was overseasoned. I wondered if the person who made it lost their sense of taste.
I wish I could give the miso mushroom a 5 star on its own (the miso beef would be a 2/5), but the offensive flavors of the Wagyu was just so bad. If I come back, I would only get the miso mushroom. I’m too leery to get...
Read moreI’ve been coming to sunny blue for a few years now. I usually go to the Santa Monica location, but dropped by this location as I was in the area. I ordered my omusubi with extra filling - they told me they would have to charge me extra for that, which I was surprised as the other location never charged me, but agreed. I took my food to go to eat at a park. Upon eating all the omusubi, every single one I ordered did not have extra filling, and they tasted very unseasoned. The food is already pretty pricey but to be up charged more than $1 for extra filling and then for them to be under filled and under seasoned was super disappointing. I definitely won’t be coming back to this location and wish I could...
