I've not been feeling well lately and found myself longing for some comforting home cooking outside my own kitchen. I decided to try ordering oxtails from here, and I'm so glad I did. The oxtails and cabbage were absolutely delightful. It's clear that a talented cook—maybe someone’s beloved big mama or daddy—marinated those oxtails beautifully; the meat was so tender it practically fell off the bone. It reminded me of the wonderful meals my grandmother used to make (God rest her soul).
Denise, who works there, was incredibly kind and attentive, making the experience even better. For $30, I received a generous portion of oxtails, much more than I could buy at HEB grocery store, and the seasoned cabbage was perfect—not overcooked or mushy, just the right texture. The plantains, perfect.
However, I have to admit that the peas and rice were a bit of a disappointment. As my dad used to say, “that dog don’t hunt.” They seemed a little dry and could use some more seasoning without needing to rely solely on the oxtail gravy, as suggested by customer service.
I'm genuinely thankful to Jamaican Paradise for bringing such comforting “our” type of food to the Cypress, TX area. Restaurants like this are truly needed to satisfy the Southern palate, and I’m hopeful they will continue to keep the level of high-quality food. Crossing my fingers and toes and throwing salt over my back and praying hard. “Please Jesus don't let them slip on the cooking or...

Read moreWe stopped here to give this place a try. My husband and father-in-law are both Jamaican and so they were wanting some Jamaican without having to cross into the city. There are some other places around here, but I have not been impressed and neither have they.
Some things I didn't like about this place or that we called ahead to place an order, arrived about 25 minutes later, and they hadn't even started prepping the food. To me that's a waste of time, if somebody calls in, start preparing the food. The shop was small, and there doesn't seem to be a dress code. while we were there, some chick walked in with a big t-shirt or swimsuit cover-up and some underwear and she was big, so her butt showed the whole time, which to me seems unacceptable, but we weren't eating there so it didn't matter, I guess.
They do serve plantain, but to me it's dry, and will strive both times that we visited here. The cabbage is not overcooked, but slightly under-flavored.
Their oxtail was delicious and the meat essentially was falling off the bone. I have not tried the jerk chicken yet, but my favorite Jamaican dish is jerk pork. My husband and father-in-law enjoyed the food. I'm willing to give this place a few more tries to see if I really like it or not and we'll update this to let...
