This is our new favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Cypress. The interior is well lit and very clean, including the restrooms. We interacted with at least three different staff members, and all were extremely pleasant and helpful. We really liked the all the staff we met on our visit.
The food was very good. My SO had the chicken pho. She loves pho, but she is also very picky about it. She said this was one of the best in the Houston area. The broth tends to be the challenge for a lot of establishments, they seem to have it down here. I had the grilled chicken vermicelli. I liked the flavor of the chicken, more pan seared than grilled, and the fish sauce was very mild and complimented the dish without dominating it. The egg roll was a little âmehâ though, Iâd suggest trying something else.
The âRetroâ part of the cafĂ© seems to be the music and a collection of Star Wars and other action figures from the 1980s that are mounted on shelves on the walls. If you like â80s music, youâll like their sound track. Regardless of your taste in music, youâll like the food and the staff.
The restaurant is a little challenging to find. Itâs in a strip center on the outbound 290 feeder road, west of Mueschke Rd a couple of hundred yards after Buc-eeâs, and just before the Public Storage building. If you hit Public Storage without seeing Retro Cafe, just turn in at PS and back track through the parking lot a short distance to...
Read moreI can definitely say when you first walk in. Yes, everything looks good and it's friendly and the food is very, very good, but what you don't know is when you apply for the job and you work there as an employee but them being friendly towards you as if you were a customer is completely different is if you were an employee. They don't really care about how you feel or if it's a slow pace or not. They always make you do something because if not, it will piss off the mother or the wife and the owner will get screamed at for it or if you mess up something, and it's not met up to their standards, they'll sit there and yell at you until you cry. If you were to leave anything on by accident they will threathen you to pay for a new equipment when they dont even make you sign any kinds of paper or documents and if you dont they will bring the lawyners in and try to sue you. The owner mainly and his son are the worst about it, nun of the other staff care beside maybe 1 good person and that's Bonnie she is an absolute sweetheart and has helped me more than any other staff did, When you first start working there, they expect you to know everything within an hour or a day and if not, you get yelled at by the owner for not knowing everything first hand Yes, I would recommend this place for just their food only. But if you decide to work there, I would just...
Read moreUpdate (31 Aug 2021): After numerous visits to the Retro Cafe in the last several weeks, my original review stands: The Retro Cafe on U.S. 290 in Cypress-Fairfield is OUTSTANDING! Having visited this restaurant several times now, everything I have eaten here has been excellent. The staff are professional & friendly. The service is super fast. And the quality is amazing. From the Vermicelli bowls (bun), to the Pho (Vietnamese soup), to the perfectly toasted Vietnamese-style sandwiches, to their amazing Vietnamese egg rolls, everything at the Retro Cafe is first rate. I HIGHLY recommend the Retro Cafe in NW Houston.
Original Review: OUTSTANDING! A small store-front cafe, the Retro Cafe offers excellent, high quality, authentic Vietnamese-style cuisine. Their egg rolls were hot, fresh and perfectly cooked and presented. Today, I ordered the Bun (vermicelli bowl) with char-grilled pork. Perfectly cooked lean strips of pork on a bed of vermicelli with all the right ingredients added, the dish was delicious. Although a small cafe, the Retro Cafe provides among the best Vietnamese food Houston has to offer. If you like Vietnamese cuisine and are in the northwest area of Houston near Highway 290 and Meuschke Road, the Retro Cafe is an excellent choice. Five out...
