I was a professional chef for over 20 yrs, I grew up and lived in TX most of my life. My dad made BBQ brisket on a regular basis throughout the years, I know how to make great smoked brisket, and I have eaten at some of the best BBQ joints in TX. I drove across town after reading about this place in D-Mag.... Let me just tell you.... STAY AWAY from this joke of a "bbq joint". As someone else in the reviews said... the brisket tastes like plain ole roast beef. Not much for good smoke flavor and bark. It was less than acceptable. Served on two pieces of plain white bread that was falling apart where it had soaked up what bbq sc they put on it. Had to eat it with fork as I couldn't hold the sandwich. Potato salad tasted of LOTS of Sugar and hardly any other seasonings. I ate about 3 bites then couldn't do any more. Most of this meal went in the trash can. To top it all off... the mgr/owner walks in and orders me and several other customers that we MUST wear a mask inside the building..... all while she herself is NOT wearing a mask!! LOL... I said its not a law you know? She said it is in our private property. I honestly can't see how this place stays in business with this S&!t show going on but hey..... I guess some people think this is good food & service?? Perhaps raise your standards? Last time I count on D Mag for a good recommendation too. Hopefully I'll save someone from wasting $16.50 on a brisket sand, sweet - potato salad and a beverage. I know Dallas has much better than this garbage. I won't be back to this one.

So a friend of mine was nearby there and decided to try Odoms and offered to buy me lunch. So I can only review the food that I got. I went on the website and saw they were voted for “best ribs”. I opted for the rib plate with my 2 sides of the beans and cabbage. I also get an extra side of potato salad. I am a cook, foodie and have frequented a LOT of bbq joints in Texas. POTATO SALAD - too sweet. Didn’t taste fresh. Couldn’t put my finger on the odd seasoning that was in it. It tasted like maybe an old seasoning was used. I threw most of it away. BEANS - ok. No juice at all. A little flavor was there. I’m pretty sure these are canned ranch style beans. I added them to my chicken chili I was making. CABBAGE - ok. Again odd seasoning. Maybe same old seasoning that was used in potato salad. I ate a few bites and threw the rest away. RIBS - overcooked and under seasoned. I’m pretty sure they were boiled. So not to waste this meat I ended up deboning the rib, chopping up and making a “chopped rib sandwich”. *sigh* I really wanted to give a better review but I just couldn’t. Oh well. I will never get food from them again.

I was very much looking forward to eating here, but was very disappointed. They absolutely smother the meat in BBQ sauce. I learned the hard way, they won't ask if you want it wet or dry, you have to speak up and say dry. There are no tables and food was take out only. The staff were very nice and helpful, especially since the way you start is different than most BBQ places. Brisket-was very tender but was very chewy and lacked seasoning. No smoke ring no flavor Ribs-Were again very tender but again had no seasoning. Actually tasted as if they had been boiled and then finished on smoker. Smoked sausage-was very good. Nice taste and would have been better if not smothered in sauce. Potato salad- this was inedible. Was like potato mush with taste I cannot identify. 2 bites and done Beans- these had great BBQ flavor but unfortunately they were undercooked and were still little crunchy. BBQ sauce-they seem proud of this sauce and smother/cover almost everything in it. It does have good flavor and little tanginess to it. As far as BBQ goes this was not a place I want to repeat again.

Just a stone's throw from Dallas' newest hipster scene, Trinity Groves, homed in a small historic looking storefront building, lies a true gem of a BBQ joint. Family owned for decades, Odom's Bar-B-Que is a local favorite to those in the know. Succulent meats include beef brisket, pork ribs, spicy link sausage, and bone in chicken. Each is offered a la carte by the pound, sandwich (except for chicken) or a plate which includes only ranch style beans and potato salad. The smoked chicken is offered a la carte, half or whole as well as a combo plate. All includes sliced white bread and BBQ sauce. The sauce, OMG the SAUCE! Odom's Bar-B-Que sauce sets a hard to reach standard for bbq sauce. Unlike most, it's thin, somewhat watery even. But the spicy taste, while not hot, is absolutely amazing. It's the perfect companion to the perfect BBQ. From previous visits at lunch time, we know Odom's offers down home, good old fashioned, finger licking, sexy even, slap your Momma soul food lunch plates. We have seen smothered pork chops, meatloaf, turkey tettrazini, roasted oxtails, okra, mac n cheese, collard greens, pinto beans, creamed corn and corn bread among other delightful offerings on the steam table. Food Network star Rachel Ray used to have a show where she traveled to cities across the country. Her mission/challenge was to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and midday snack for under $40.00. More often than not she accomplished it by asking the local residents for advice. I'm sure if you asked anyone within a few miles where to get the best BBQ you would be directed outside of the hipster high faluting Trinity Groves scene to...
