Pleasant service and a nice dining area, with quick drink refills and large, comfortable booths.
We had some mixed feeling about the food: *The calamari was really good, very flavorful, crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Our favorite thing that we ordered. *The steamer clams were tasty and well cooked, and the herbed butter clam broth that they came with was delicious. They were hard to enjoy due to the quantity of sand in them, though. It's been a long time since I've had steamers and normally when I get them it's littlenecks rather than Ipswich like these, but it doesn't seem like there should have been so much that my son on the other side of the booth could hear it grinding against my teeth. *The fish and chips were good, tender and flaky with tasty seasoned fries. It was a mild-tasting New England fish that isn't as robust as my general preference, but very enjoyable *I'm not quite sure what I expected from the smoked fish dip, but for the price, i would have expected more of it: there was about an ice cream scoop of the dip itself, with equal portions diced onions and tomatoes on either side. The dip itself was really very good, which made the small quantity all the more disappointing. *I liked the unsweetened iced tea, which probably doesn't sound like much but it is. Some people don't know how to brew tea properly and many of these people work in otherwise-good restaurants. They do not work at The Fish Grill.
Long story short: we don't live nearby and I wouldn't make a special trip out to Dania just to eat here, but if I was in the general vicinity and choosing somewhere to eat, I'd definitely be up to trying more...
Read moreStopped by The Fish Grill (TFG) tonight during an overnight stay in FLL en route home to ATX tomorrow. TFG was only a block away from the hotel, and thanks to poor service by the hotel’s airport shuttle (different review), we arrived at TFG an hour before they closed. We were warmly received despite the late hour!
We ordered quickly, a martini and fried clams. Both came out quickly. The martini was perfect! Delicious! The clams were just OK. Served piping hot out of the fryer, but the breading overwhelmed the clams. We ended up picking through the fried breading to find the clams. The tartar sauce was good.
As entrees we decided on the baked scrod dish, clam chowder starter, and rice pilaf and green beans on the side; we also ordered the Maryland fried soft shell crab sandwich, coleslaw on the side! The clam chowder was OK, a bit bland and a tad salty. The scrod was a HUGE piece of fish, the sauce was a bit salty also. The soft shell crab suffered from batter that was too thick for the crab… the slaw was good, and a re-visit to the tartar sauce confirmed it was good.
The Fish Grill delivered in a pinch. It felt like some of the dishes/sauces suffered from an end of the day/sauces simmer all day, reduce and get salty by the end of the day. It may also be that salt is simply used too much in the kitchen. Either way, it was an OK meal at closing time. After a long day of travel, we were happy to find TFG was still open!
BTW, Austin was our server… he did a fantastic job! Did not make us feel rushed. He was attentive, but not hovering… that was...
Read moreFirst let me start by saying I read all of the reviews before stopping here, and should've trusted my gut!!! Let me just say the negative reviews must all be true, cause the service here was awful. Came in and sat at the bar, we were ignored for about 7 minutes with no recognition or offer of a drink and menu. Customer at the end of bar had a drink and was ready to order food, so she took his order, again, ignoring us. Bartender (Black curly long hair) then comes and greets three people that had just sat at the other end of the bar, and takes all of of their drink orders. At this point I'm staring her down hard hoping she'll take a second and not continue to ignore us. Finally she asks us what we'd like to drink. It gets better though... She then proceeds to cash out three other individual patrons afterwards... Been there 12 minutes at this point... Still no drink (ordered a water and diet coke). Place wasn't busy. It is MLK day however, and I'm hoping the color of my skin didn't dictate the attitude and lack of service. Finally when it hit 15 minutes of no drinks, no conversation, and her helping others, we left. I don't know if she was new, lazy, or flat didn't give a crap. Hands down the worst service I've had in a very long time. Needless to say, we'll never go back. Managers should get bartenders and servers that actually want to work or care about where they work. Reflects poorly on what could've been a great...
