The restaurant is a very large space that is nicely divided into different areas. The decor is tasteful and understated; nothing trendy or over the top chic. Everything appears to be well kept and maintained. Apparently, the rear section of the establishment is used as an entertainment space, where they periodically offer Cabaret Shows that come complete with a full buffet as part of admission. They have ample parking and being so large, as well as on a main thoroughfare, they are very easy to find.
Our gathering of six, which was part of a birthday celebration for a friend, made early reservations for just past opening to avoid rush hour traffic delays and headaches. We were all traveling from different locations in Broward County and this seemed to make the most sense. We were immediately seated in a very large, comfortable booth for our 5:00, pm reservation. No one felt crowded or squeezed. Our needs were taken care of very quickly by what I would say is a very experienced, well seasoned, pleasant, attentive staff that has obviously been with the establishment for many, many years and who ENJOY working there. None of us were drinking alcohol, but they do have a nice full service bar and a decent selection of wines. So, while relaxing a while over soft drinks and appetizers, it became clear that the restaurant appeals to a more mature, often retired clientele, that appreciates the quiet, childless atmosphere and soft background dinner music. That soft background dinner music was gently and masterfully provided by a live pianist. It was a nice touch. The music set a peaceful, tranquil tone and it was easy to hold conversations with each other using our normal speaking volume.
There are specials, but their basic menu offers the usual expected steakhouse meals. Believe me, they have been in business a long time for a reason and CLEARLY they know how to cook every cut of steak and every slow roasted prime rib to perfection. You won't be disappointed. Certainly, EVERYONE in our group was VERY satisfied. Our orders were mostly different steak cuts and prime rib. Someday I'll try their Tomahawk steak. Thankfully, they have the foresight to offer different sizes of their beef offerings to satisfy every size appetite, which can range from smaller portions, to a Fred Flintstone sized "you can't be serious". We tried their fried, fresh mozzarella appetizer which comes in nice big thick slices, not the pre frozen sticks you get elsewhere. We also had fried zucchini which was very nice as well. We stayed kind of light on appetizers because we didn't want to fill up too soon. Some of us had soups and/or salads. The lobster bisque I had was very nice. Their bread rolls were nice and hot enough for the butter to melt.... That's a big deal for me. I hate it when the butter doesn't melt.
This is a steakhouse and they stay with what they do best. My judgement reflects exactly that. This is a great steakhouse offering great cuts of beef, Prime Rib, salads, bread and a nice selection of vegetables. The dessert menu was more than ample and they presented a glass covered cart of samples to show exactly what you are getting.
The restaurant also offers seafood. One of our party ordered the broiled fisherman's platter which seemed a little sparse, but he didn't leave hungry. They offer you a pick of whole, live Maine lobsters when in season and I will be sure to return for that and maybe one of their cabaret shows in the future. I am tired of just having lobster tails. Maine lobsters are the real thing for this former New Englander, so I look forward to my future visits.
The food is good, the waitstaff is attentive and pleasantly engaging, while the atmosphere is WONDERFULLY quiet. The clientele is overwhelmingly more mature, but I'm no spring chicken either and I genuinely appreciated that maturity to be honest. Family restaurants are fine, but sometimes you want something more quiet and refined. They are good at what they do, so if you want a good steak or prime rib, give them a try. Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe were here with a party of 6 to celebrate a birthday tonight, with most of our party visiting in town from north Florida and Pennsylvania. We did not make a reservation but didnāt have to wait more than 15 minutes for a table at 6:30 pm on a Saturday. We were seated right by the pianist, which was really cool. My parents have been here previously and raved about it. We left very disappointed.
Complimentary rolls and water are brought out as you peruse the menu. We were ready to order, but tried to order drinks other than water and received attitude from our waiter (Peter) because he wanted to take entree orders first. Weird - it all went into the system at the same time anyway, but okay, no problem. We ordered two appetizers as well - mozzarella rounds and fried zucchini. The apps came out in a timely manner and both were good, although the fried zucchini couldāve been sliced thinner and had more seasoning and perhaps a different dipping sauce. The horseradish sauce it came with was very overpowering.
Everything comes with a garden or Caesar salad, but we all opted for Caesar. It was delicious and one of the best parts of the meal, sadly⦠We had a bit of a wait for our entrees, but thatās expected and outlined on the menu. We thought we were ordering two New York strip steaks, two lobster tails, the shrimp and scallop pasta, the shrimp and steak Marsala pasta, a strip steak, and a top sirloin steak with various sides. Andres dropped off our food and was great at bringing us the one round of refills for drinks and any extras (Parmesan cheese, ketchup, sauces). He was very attentive and we would definitely request him if we ever ate here again.
The orders were rung in wrong per our receipt - we received only one lobster tail, the strip was changed to a more expensive New York strip. Iām not sure what happened with the doneness requests because they were all over cooked except for one New York strip that was requested medium rare. The two medium strips requested medium were super dry and burnt on the outside, plus overcooked on the inside. The top sirloin requested medium well was very well done and dry. The pasta dishes were actually the only decent ones. I know - from a steakhouse?! But yes. The shrimp and scallops and steak in the pasta were perfectly cooked and so delicious. We all ate off of those two entrees for the most part.
Our drinks were refilled once by the food runner who we flagged down because our waiter was nowhere to be found and didnāt check in on us at all once we ordered, not even after the food came out. Two of us never got a drink refill at all and were sitting with empty cups shortly after the food arrived. The steaks were so burnt and dry that we needed something to wash it down. No one checked in on us at all once our food was dropped off, so we couldnāt voice any of these concerns. There were no managers in sight either. The next time anyone came to our table, it was because the check was dropped off.
The bill was around $250 for six entrees and two apps. Since this place literally has steakhouse in the name, I didnāt think Iād be on here talking about how the worst entrees we got were the steaks. Up until the entrees, I wouldāve given the food 3 stars, although the service was so bad. I wouldnāt come back after everything we experienced today. If you do decide to try this place still - donāt risk ordering a steak. Thereās a 25% chance itāll be cooked as you requested plus a good chance your order is entered wrong anyway. If I had to eat here again, the pasta dishes are the only thing Iād order. This was a real damper on what was supposed to be a fun birthday dinner. We didnāt even mention the birthday since we all just wanted to go home by the time anyone...
Ā Ā Ā Read more1st time eating at Tropical Acres (now affectionately referred to as The "TAS"), and it both lived up to and surpassed our lofty expectations due to all of the spectacular reviews we've seen, both on Google and the S Florida foody groups on Facebook. We tucked in for a drink at the bar, which was friendly, low key, zero pretense and had a few cocktails while waiting for our seat. They called our name over an intercom (charming, and reminder of a different age for me). There were families of all sorts, birthdays, romantic dinners all over. We were sat facing the piano player (more about that later) and were almost immediately greeted by two friendly servers. Questions were asked, recommendations were made, wine was ordered (the list is just right tbh, with offerings for everyone. The Barolo wasnt overpriced, and we went with it.). Stone crab was on menu for appetizers (6, nice medium claws) and were ordered that to start are were allowed to linger over some wine and the app before being asked if we'd like to order. It was a date night, and it was nice not to be rushed. We both went with the prime rib, and both the medium cut and large were generous and arrived perfectly. We moved here from the mid-west three years ago, where supper clubs abound with prime rib, brandy old fashioneds (i prefer bourbon, but when in Rome...) and the quality was in fact right there with any of the best up there. A lot of people may not be familiar with the designation behind "Certified Angus Beef." Many restaurants will say they offer Angus, or Black Angus beef. Nothing wrong with it, but it's not CAB and it matters for a number of reasons. There are specific criteria that it has to meet to be designated so, and the restaurant is showing that it wants to offer top-quality meat when they do. In fact, you can't legally put the label "Certified Angus Beef" on your menu unless you actually sell it and sell enough of it. Obviously TAS does. Only 3% of the beef in the USA is certified annually. Dinner was lovely, the staff was friendly and attentive, and we lingered watching the phenomenal piano player over coffee and a few after-dinner drinks. We are both musicians, and throughout dinner asked him to play everything from music from Fiddler on the Roof, to jazz standards like Autumn Leaves, and he even played some Oscar Peterson and Brubeck when I asked. We asked if we could buy him a drink which he took, chatted with us a bit and headed as his ride was there. There is a disappearing art in pianists that have a repertoire like that, no iPad or music required. Kudos to TAS for supporting musicians on top of offering a top-notch experience! Can't recommend it enough, and we will be back along with friends. I appreciate that the folks at TAS read these reviews and respond (always a good sign) A couple of suggestions: Get a small set of portable steps for the stage. It was precarious to see the gentleman step off. It is just a little too high. Secondly - set up a QR code, tied to a Venmo or Zelle account for the musicians and post it on a little placard on the piano. Many artists do this, it is an easy way for people to give tips as an increasing proportion of people don't carry cash. You can either transfer it to them at the end of the night or just help them set up their own. Most of all, thanks for making our date night excellent just by doing what you...
