Similan - Andaman Thai Danville — Restaurant in Danville

So, my wife picked this restaurant to celebrate my birthday dinner. We went here yesterday hoping to have a really good time and she wanted to surprise me with a birthday desert at the end. She made a reservation over the phone and was told that the restaurant would arrange for the birthday desert surprise at the end of the meal.

When at the restaurant, without my knowledge, she walked up to the male server and reminds him of the desert to be served. The guy was very rude in his reply and wanted to check the ID to verify that I'm not faking my birthday for a treat. When my wife offered to pay for the desert but still keep it a surprise, the guy was still very rude in his tone and he said, I quote "WE ONLY HAVE 2 DESERTS, MANGO WITH STICKY RICE AND FRIED BANANA WITH ICE CREAM. WE DON'T DO BIRTHDAY DESERTS HERE". I can't explain the rudeness in which he said that. The bold characters are to emphasize that rude tone.

To the restaurant owner:

If you really have this policy of checking ID for birthday surprise, you should say so over the phone rather than ruining such celebrations for couples who come in hope for a good time.

The only reason I'm writing this review on my wife's behalf is because the tone in which the guy spoke to my wife has bothered her.

I have been going to Similan Thai for as long as I can remember with a break during COVID of course. I have been mostly happy with the food. For the first time, though, I was disappointed. I have been ordering my favorite drunken noodles (veg and chicken) for the past 2 weeks, mostly for takeout. This week's drunken noodles seemed unusually soft. The broccoli was overcooked and mushy. And there was dull smell in the chicken noodles dish that I could not explain. My son immediately said he can't eat it. I called the restaurant, but was told that they can't do anything about it. If I wanted I could bring back the dish and they will make a new one! Well, if it is already served on plates, how can I bring back the food!? It's unhygienic. Other restaurants give the benefit of the doubt to the customer and gladly offer a discount on the next dish or a replacement next time. They did not. Frankly, I did not expect this response. I recommend that they be more consistent in their dish preparation. And give some credit for being a repeat customer for such...

This was the second time we’ve ordered from Similan Thai Cuisine and won’t be the last. Both orders were for take away and I have to agree with another reviewer that their take away containers were thoughtful because they sealed liquid dishes well in containers as well as in a sealed plastic bag. The food was fresh and tasted delicious. I ordered mostly for non-spicy folks, but enjoyed the flavors the dishes had to offer. We all know pad Thai, but Similan offers a large variety of dishes to choose from, all very healthy and good sized portions. Here’s a snap shot of what we ordered tonight; it was for 6 people and we had a whole lot of leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch 😁 My personal favorite was the Thai basil chx and the Gang Jurd, a hearty but light soup that tastes healthy!
