Zocalo Deli & Mexican Bakery is an unassuming little shop in the tiny strip mall beside Ben David Jewellers in Danville. Upon first into Zocalo's we were hit with this delightfully delicious aroma & vision of MANY beautiful sweets and warmly greeted by a lovely young lady!!😋 We thought it was gonna be a new go-to dessert spot, but sadly, we were wrong.🥴 The young lady was very knowledgeable and helpful by answering any questions we had about the yummy looking pastries they had. She was friendly, which is kind of rare these days!🙃 As I browsed the large VARIETY of pastries, I tried to decide what to buy, then I spotted with EXCITEMENT......🎊Tres Leches Cake!!!🎊 Those who KNOW, if Tres Leches Cake (3 milks) is made right, it's one of the most delicious things your mouth will EVER taste!!!🥰 I had to have it!! My sister got a couple of small pastries (I don't recall just what as this is a late post). I couldn't wait to get home for dinner, then try my cake slice! Finally the moment of truth.....I take a bite!! Totally disappointed.🙄 This was the worst Tres Leches Cake I've EVER had and here's WHY...1) It was the SOGGIEST Tres Leches Cake I had ever, so the texture was really off-putting and I'm texture sensitive person!! I mean it was total MUSH. 2) It lacked flavor! I mean it had none, like no sweetness at all!? I couldn't eat it, I tried.🥴 I'm NOT sure I'd be a return person customer, but if I did, I'd definitely have to try something else!?🥴So, I asked my sister if her little pastries were good, thinking maybe she fared better than me!? She said her pastries had a very GOOD flavor, but they were very DRY!! She said she didn't think she would buy those again, but may be open to trying something else!? If I decide to go back, it would be because their service was good! I forgot to take pictures, sorry!🥴But, don't take my word for it, if you're in or around the Danville area, go check out Zocalo's for yourself! I'll be looking for...
Read moreI had a baby shower on a Sunday, the dessert plans fell through and I needed something at the last minute. Zocalo was able to decorate a cake for me in 45 mins which turned out nicely considering the time.
I personally really liked the cake, however my family were not fans as they are used to the typical box cake or birthday cake from the grocery store. I did mention to the ladies at the counter that I wanted the cake dry, but they insisted that I get at least medium wetness. After asking people what they thought about the cake, I definitely should have gotten it dry. If you are getting a cake for an old school crowd, get the cake dry, or look elsewhere. The folks running the counter don't speak English, so definitely prepare to have a little patience when communicating. Overall my experience was good, and I appreciate Zocalo for whipping up that cake for me in a...
Read moreLovely little place with a huge assortment of various pastries. Worth the visit for the smells alone.
There are a couple small issues holding the place back.
First, none of the cases are labeled either with what they contain or the price. Prices ended up being very fair, so much so that they do themselves a disservice by not listing them.
Second there are no ingredients lists or names for pastries. Certainly fine if you know what you are looking at and have no allergies. Unfortunately if you are an ignorant fool like me just trying to try new things, it does make it a bit difficult to understand what you are looking at (even if it does all look delicious).
In short, great place if you know what you want. A bit intimidating if you don't. Would not recommend for anyone with dietary...
