Update 2025*
In 2025 Tokyo Grill is still on point! I'm still a regular for Sushi Sunday. This place is still amazing, I'm so grateful for it. I'm a sucker for good sushi and this is the best I've ever had. I've tried other restaurants that overcharge me like crazy, and the rolls are just all so basic and plain. When I go to Tokyo Grill you can tell they take this sushi business seriously, and on Sundays it's so affordable I load up anywhere between 3-5 different rolls. My favorite is still the Fantastic Roll that's been my number 1 from the beginning, but don't sleep on the Sakura roll either! One of my favorite things about this place is the pickup Window. When I order, I use their website, pay in advance, and when I get there I just walk up to the window give them my name and they hand me my order, they're really quick to answer anybody standing at the window. I've never had a bad experience ever since I've been coming here, I'm hoping they stay in business for many more years to come.
I am here every week for Sushi Sunday. I've tried almost every chef specialty roll at this point there may be one or two I haven't, but every single Roll is a winner. My favorite roll is the Fantastic Roll, but some notable mentions would be the Downtown Philly roll, and the King Kong Roll. My girlfriend loves the Ping Pong Roll and the Tiger Roll, which are also amazing.
The Sashimi is on point as well, I get the Eel Sashimi every visit. I've tried every sashimi there, but the Eel and Salmon are my favorite. I tried it regular sashimi style with the cucumber and what not, but that wasn't for me. I enjoy the sushi style sashimi where they place the eel over the rice, I can't get enough of that.
Though I am primarily here for the sushi, a lot of my friends don't eat sushi, but they come along anyways on Sushi Sunday for the Hibachi bowls and watch me mow down my plate. I know those Hibachi bowls are good, I've had a Salmon bowl a couple of times. I really appreciate how they aren't afraid to load you up with the white sauce here.
This may be one of my longest reviews, but this is a very important one. This place is an absolute Gem in the area, I can order sushi online half off on Sunday using my phone and pick it up at the pickup window without even having to go inside the restaurant. What a time to be alive. It really makes me excited for Sundays as if Football isn't enough right now. I Recommend this place to anybody for any occasion, any diet, any day, you cannot go wrong here.
Thanks Tokyo Grill for the amazing sushi you've been serving me over the years, I'll see...
Read moreLet me start this review with our server. She was impeccable. Loved her energy she was ontop of everything too. Probably the best part of this experience. When we left we were set on a 3 star rating.
Minor complaints i asked for no mushrooms. (Not because I dont like mushrooms) im alergic. There was no attempt at making this dish without mushrooms. And I was not told that they couldn't remove the mushrooms from the vegies or I would have ordered something else. That aside if they ask you for sauce say yes or you get everything plain. For some reason we didn't get knives. Its not the end of the world but it doesn't help with table etiquette when you gotta shove 2 bites worth of steak in your mouth at once because your fork won't cut through the meat.My partner loved their meal and would like to take home a gallon of their teriyaki sauce.
Your asking yourself how did we end up at 1 star then??. Well as we were walking out to the car I went from full and content to nauseated and worried quite quickly. We got in the car and got to the exit of the plaza and I looked over at my partner and said "if I puke their rating goes down to 1 star." We hit the first intersection and im was fighting with everything I had not to ruin the interior of my car. Needless to say we drove the rest of the way home with the passenger window down and my partner got to live out their fast and furious dreams of getting me home and saving my car from an expensive day getting detailed. We didn't even have anything new or out of the ordinary my partner got steak and chicken and...
Read moreFor being a small town in Virginia's only real attempt at sushi, Tokyo Grill takes full advantage of their position and leaves much to be desired.
In the world of sushi, there are two things you absolutely must get right - the rice, and the quality of the fish.
Pretty consistently I found the rice to be dry and overcooked, which is the fundamental Foundation of sushi. As for the fish- it's kind of a coin flip on freshness as sometimes it's satisfactory, other times you're looking at several days past the freshness that proper sushi demands. This sadly results in many of the more conventional offerings (such as Nagiri or Sashimi) being waxy and subpar in both crisp texture and finish.
Tokyo Grill seems to try to make up for this fact by offering a variety of sushi rolls that rely heavily on spicy mayonnaise sauces or eel sauces it's overwhelm the pallete instead of focusing on the protein.
Considering the lack of alternatives in the area - you're kind of stuck with Tokyo Grill on this one... It would be nice if the itamae wasn't coasting asleep at the wheel on things.
While the post staff and servers seem incredibly young, they are definitely full of spunk so you're not going to have any issues with service here. Coupled with a full bar, what they lack in experience - they make up for in enthusiasm.
All in all, not a bad little spot - but don't...
