I left Decatur in 1987 and moved to Tennessee. My parents still reside in Decatur so anytime I come back to visit I always like to patronize the small businesses that are locally owned. My husband and I recently tried the gin mill because the setting from the outside looking in but very quaint and nice.
However we were disappointed with the service we received. We had to wait at least 15 minutes to be seated and then it took over 45 minutes to receive her food and drinks.
The food was okay but I guess I was expecting a little more with the prices they charge.
We live in Brentwood so we are used to paying more for meals but we also expect the meal to be worth it.
I feel for this town these prices were high. Our waitress Only came to our table twice. Once to take our order and the second time to bring us our drinks and food all at one time. She didn’t not bother to ask us if we would want a refill or to refill our water glasses.
During the last 10 minutes we were at the restaurant we heard some yelling in the back and then saw a older gentleman I would guess in his mid-50s throwing stuff around behind the bar. It was clear he had just scolded an employee or someone that worked back in the kitchen. As we were leaving I stopped and asked the hostess who the gentleman was if he worked there she proceeded to tell me that he was the owner and his name was Josh Irby.
My husband and I just looked at each other and were dumbfounded that and somebody that acted like that was actually managing the restaurant let alone the owner.
I own a boutique and I would never use the words that Mr. Irby felt was OK to use to any of my employees. I understand sometimes you have to reprimand an employee but it should be done quietly or after hours it should not be done to where everyone in the restaurant can hear it.
My husband and I knew then that the next time we made a trip back home to visit my parents we would never be patronizing this restaurant again.
A few days later I was at the Land of Lincoln credit union on N Oakland when I immediately recognized the individual and the line next to me as Mr. Irby himself.
Of course after the way he had acted a few nights before it was easy to remember him. We both left at the same time and he got in a van with his business logo across the side. I was very much surprised when I looked over getting ready to back out when I noticed that he was blowing into a device to even get his vehicle to start . I guess that explains why he acted the way he did a few nights before.
I would not recommend this restaurant. If you were looking for a nice restaurant downtown I would definitely...
Read moreWife an I dined here during lunch on our 19th anniversary. We were seated right away. We were given an option of choosing a booth or a high top table, my wife chose a booth. We were sat in the center booth with a clear view of the entire room. We were able to admire the unique wallpaper, ornate mantle over the bar and the varied artwork on the walls. The room was filled with many different people as we sat there. Ages ranging from early 20's to 60's people dressed in common stair and business casual (and two people in scr7bs). We had two waitresses, one of which told us today was her first day. She seemed excited and delighted to serve us. The other, though experienced in her tasks did not carry the same vibrancy. My wife ordered a soup and salad, I ordered a soup and sandwich. The lobster bisque was pleasant, however the chicken and rice tasted like Progresso soup from a can. The Cuban sandwich on Chibata bread was suprising stuffed with meat. However it lacked depth in flavor, the cheese needed to be stronger. The most disappointing aspect of the experience was the continued drips on my shoulder from the A/C duct overhead. Once we informed the waitress she told us that happens in our booth and the one next to it. I beared with it since I wanted to sit next to my wife. Who was asked if we were together when the check was presented. I will add one final compliment to the sturdiness of the tables as ours was used as a bracing point for a lady as she slipped on the floor when walking...
Read moreWe sat upstairs. That was very dark. There's no lighting. I had to use my phone to view the menu.. The decor made no sense... The floor carpet was cheetah which was kind of tacky next to. It was a weird green wallpaper with skulls. There were chandeliers and upstairs was very dark as I stated previously..
I got a lamb shank and it was kind of chewy and gamy but what I couldn't stand was the gravy they put it in. It smelled a lot like the gravy that would be in soft dog food.
The waitress was nice but she kept messing up orders and switching them out.. the worst part was when the guy next to me ordered asparagus and she gave it to somebody else on accident and he ate off of it and then she realized that it wasn't his and he said something about it and she gave it to the person who ordered it originally and said "here's what's left of what he didn't eat" expecting the person next to me to finish off what the man at the next table ate.
The appetizers were okay but it seemed like everything was microwaved. The prices are ridiculous for food. That seems to be kind of cheap and service. That is very disgusting whenever it comes to whatever the hell I witnessed.
I ordered a few alcoholic drinks. They were all very strong as of alcohol wasn't measured. I do like booze but not that much to where I can't really enjoy my drink.
This restaurant is very overrated. I don't think I will...
