Lots of red flags in a pretty room.
I’ll start with the positive. The place is very nicely furnished with great decor, lighting, and even the music was pleasant. The food was....ok. But probably not for the price. We paid $50 for 3 people, ordering chicken & waffles for me, and cinnamon French toast (x2). Breading on chicken was definitely too crispy for this type of dish and just over cooked although the flavor was pretty good. The CFT was bland and underwhelming unless you happened upon a cinnamon swirl, of which there were not many, and weren’t around for most bites. The syrup was weirdly bland and just not very sweet (weird considering it’s syrup).
For drinks we got an iced coffee, with cream and sugar, that I didn’t enjoy. Frankly better coffee comes out of my Keurig at home. The others got an OJ (more about that later) and a bottle of water.
Now for the red flags - where the heck is this place?! It’s hard to find! When you get there via GPS like we did (not local to Decatur) the side parking lot has a giant sign pointing directly to the place, that says “Curry’s Martini Bar” (or something like that), and then the side door that we found has a piece of paper on the door about 4in x 4in that indicates, yes you’ve found Whisk’d. We get inside and there’s no one near any entrance, and no signs indicating where to go. Turns out it’s a walk-up-to-the-counter type of place, which is fine. Frankly I doubt I would’ve enjoyed table service from any employee in this place. Speaking of employees, the moment we got to the counter, was the moment it all went south. We grabbed menus and were greeted by a middle aged woman. There were no drink offerings on the menu at all, so we just started winging it. My wife likes a mimosa at brunch, so she asked for that, to which the woman replied “we don’t have our liquor license.” I asked “too new?” Meaning - hey did you guys just open (and maybe don’t have it yet?) (again, we’re not locals), to which she replied “that’s up to the state.” About that...... I’m in the beverage industry , so I know a little bit about licenses, etc, and this just doesn’t hold up. You don’t have a liquor license? Ok well you wouldn’t need one to serve champagne, which is what’s in a mimosa. Because champagne isn’t liquor. Also, the place was a bar before, so I know it’s zoned to be able to sell alcohol. So why would it be up to the state? Did they do something to get their license revoked? Did they just not pay it? Also I should point out, THERE WERE TWO BOTTLES OF CHAMPAGNE IN THE COLD BOX DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF WHERE WE WERE STANDING, RIGHT BESIDE A BOTTLE OF ORANGE JUICE. So if you can’t serve alcohol, maybe don’t feature it prominently, in the place where people order, and then maybe don’t treat your customers like idiots when they try to order it.
Anyways, we were handed our “silverware” - yes I’m quoting what this same woman said - or in all reality, plastic ware, wrapped in plastic, with a napkin, plus tiny packets of salt and pepper - for your convenience! I’ll remind you this was a $50 breakfast for 3 people with no booze. Our food was brought to us by another disinterested employee who plopped our food down, and didn’t bother to ask if we needed anything else, or anything of the sort. I left a $5 tip at the register for this service. Jesus I am too nice to people.
We ended up leaving through the “front door” - this location is so weird - which is a beautiful wooden awning with “CURRY’S” engraved into it.
I get the feeling these guys aren’t going to make it. The place seems nice, genuinely. Someone definitely put money into the place, but the food, service, and drinks were all very underwhelming. We went here instead of driving to Another Broken Egg because we like eating local and getting to experience the charm of family-owned businesses, but we didn’t really find that here. 2* because the food and drink were okay although overpriced, and the service was bad. Honestly one of the stars just comes from the place being nice and clean. Wouldn’t recommend;...
Read moreI found myself in Decatur around breakfast time -- an extremely unusual occurrence. Figuring I might as well get a bite while I had the opportunity to try someplace new to me, I saw the excellent reviews of Whisk'd and decided I'd give it a go.
This is a smaller restaurant serving mostly breakfast and brunch options. It's located in a little residential area and is super cute. There's a small chicken mural outside and the inside is homey and cozy. A quick check of their Facebook page revealed they change up their menu with fresh, seasonal offerings fairly regularly.
I placed an order to go and it was ready when I arrived about 12 minutes later. They weren't super busy, but I saw that the tables were spaced at a safe distance and everyone except those who were eating was masked.
My stomach was a little upset from nerves (I'd just taken an exam), so I opted for something that seemed lighter and safe: brown sugar and maple oatmeal. This dish consisted of fresh oats, bourbon maple syrup, and a brown sugar pecan crumble. The oatmeal came out ultra hot in a large plastic container, with the syrup and crumble in two small cups that I could drizzle on at my leisure.
It was deeeeelicious, and a super hearty serving. The oatmeal is "Irish cut" -- which I learned means that the oats have been cut into smaller pieces. This made for a smoother, silkier, less gritty experience than normal oatmeal, which I enjoyed. The bourbon maple syrup wasn't overly sweet and had a lovely autumnal flavor. And that pecan crumble was divine -- my only complaint is that I wish there had been just a touch more of it.
As I mentioned, I'm not in Decatur often, and especially not for breakfast, but if I find myself there around that time again, I would return here in a heartbeat. I'd love to try some of their heartier options on a day my stomach isn't...
Read moreThis was a bad way to start the weekend! We tried this restaurant seeing it had good reviews, only to find out they take your money upfront, you go to the counter to order then.... WAIT, And WAIT, and WAIT!!!!If You're Looking For a Friendly Atmosphere DON'T Come Here! You Won't Find it! Very Rude People, work Here! Needless to say we waited for 40 Minutes after paying & Ordering our Breakfast, We Never Received! I asked the waitress for some toast & jelly for my husband's breakfast and she said: I don't remember what kind of jelly you ordered so your getting Strawberry!! I said politely it was Raspberry jelly. She then returned with raspberry jelly and SLAMMED it on the Counter, and jelly went everywhere????? I then went to the Cashier & said we waited for almost 45 minutes and we still don't have our food? I asked for the money back! She gave it back to me then ran after me and said it wasn't 45 minutes and she told me when I ordered it would be a 45 minute wait! I told her that she didn't, because if she did I would have walked out right then and there!!!! Don't waste...
