Big Chill Surf Cantina — Restaurant in Delaware

In all my years of working and patronizing bars and restaurants, I have never experienced such unabashedly misogynistic treatment to women in an establishment as I saw tonight at Big Chill Surf Cantina.

When two strangers decided to shamelessly objectify my fiancé, security immediately came through to tell her, a disabled woman, that she was somehow escalating a situation she would have loved to extinguish from the get-go. The whole staff seemed dead-set on letting her know that she was unwelcome there. And when she brought that up, they had the audacity to tell us, “You can’t say this is an unsafe place for women.”

A disabled woman made a fervent effort to convey that she felt unsafe, and she was immediately silenced by the entire staff. We hadn’t even ordered a drink by the time we were asked to leave, because somehow, the perverse desires of middle-aged men override the safety of women in general. Security staff behaved in a way that was clearly intended to directly intimidate us. It was absurd and disgusting.

I’m sure someone will respond to this on behalf of the restaurant. I am imploring anyone who reads this to disregard that response. Their behavior was bottom-of-the-barrel. Their establishment is, beyond any reasonable doubt, an unsafe place for women. This is an absolutely toxic environment, and if your intention is to patronize a restaurant that regards women as human beings, I would suggest you go literally anywhere but Big Chill Surf Cantina.

I cannot say it enough: Women are not safe at this establishment.

My friends and I were here on July 19, 2025. A male patron intentionally and knowingly sexually assaulted my friend. We spoke to multiple bartenders and staff about the incident, however the patron was not removed, despite the staff stating that multiple woman had made complaints against this man. When another friend spoke to this patron stating not to touch women, two unidentified plain-clothes men with security brutally grabbed and physically dragged the only woman of color in our group out of the bar, leaving her with significant bruising and scratches. Our entire group was then kicked out and left traumatized by the experience. It was only then that staff kindly and gently escorted the male aggressor patron out of the bar.

The complete lack of concern for the safety of women, the brutality with which staff members physically handled a woman, and the overall disregard of the trauma my friends and I experienced at this establishment is beyond...

My friend was being harassed by a creepy man and when we told staff about it they did absolutely nothing. The same man then proceeded to assault my friend and when I asked the staff again if they would finally do something about it a very BIG ill-built man in regular clothes started getting aggressive and pushed my friend who is a WOMAN…So I stepped in to deescalate the situation and the same LARGE man from before grabbed me so violently I’m left with MULTIPLE bruises on my arms. Mind you he never once stated he was security and had no identifying features to display that he was staff. No badge. No uniform. Just a very average MID looking white male with a bad hairline and even worse breath. My suggestion? Dental floss babe. ABSOLUTELY avoid this bar at ALL COSTS if you are a woman. The staff clearly not only tolerates, but promotes misogyny and harassment of women. Stay safe out...
