We were there during lunch time and ordered from the lunch menu. The Huevos con Chorizo would more appropriately be called Chorizo con Huevos, as it was difficult to tell at a glance that this dish even contained scrambled eggs. I was expecting a dish that looked like scrambled eggs with some chorizo mixed in, and which I'd ordered because scrambled eggs seemed like a lighter lunch option, but it was the opposite. A big pile of ground chorizo, with a bit of egg. It was ok eaten taco style with tortillas, but a mound of sausage was not what I had wanted.
Additionally, we were brought the complimentary chips and salsa at the time of arrival, which we munched on waiting for our drinks and for our order to be taken and the food to arrive. We ordered an appetizer of spinach queso, which was brought to us without any chips. Since our salsa chips were mostly depleted by then, I asked for chips to have with the queso. Later, on the bill I noticed I had been charged $1 for the queso chips, which does not seem right. Queso by nature should be accompanied by chips, otherwise how is it to be eaten? The menu did not say it cost $1 extra to get chips to dip into the queso.
I paid it without questioning it, because I would not have been able to do so without getting a different staff member than our waitress, who genuinely did not seem to speak more than a few words of English and who we communicated with by pointing. She was lovely and friendly, but would have been unable to understand and respond to questions about food ingredients, substitutions, issues with charges, etc. Another employee would have had to be consulted, which seemed like overkill and petty for a $1 discrepancy.
I live near enough to this restaurant that I will definitely be back, but these issues should have the attention...
Read moreI looked forward to the experience. So, it's with great disappointment that I write this review. We had a prescheduled event of about 45 people. Service was extremely slow and unorganized. Chips and salsa, which was their staple appetizer for this restaurant arrived over 30 minutes late. Salsa was warm. Water and drinks were not served until after meals were served which was about an hour into service but every was not served Water. Had to constantly hunt the one waitress down to ask for things. The seafood soup which was to be a medley of 4 types of seafood only had 2. The soup was also watery. My main course was delivered so late, I had to take it to go. When I was finally able to eat it, it was very salty. Only one waitress was assigned to our group while 3 to 4 waitresses hung around the front desk off and on during our event doing nothing. Finally, our event was ending. Everyone is looking for the waitresses to close out checks. The waitresses closed out half the room and then disappears. No longer to be seen. After 15 to 20 minutes, I had to go to the desk to tell them that we are trying to close out but our waitresses disappeared. Apparently, she was out waiting tables. That explained everything. The lack of attention. The food being extremely late and unorganized service. The waitresses being flustered. There should have been no less than 2 waitresses assigned to our group and maybe a runner. After this experience, I would never recommend this establishment for events. It was not a...
Read moreI actually rate the La Tolteca in Barley Mill a bit higher than its cousin along Concord Pike. Why? I think the atmosphere is a bit better than the other location. Sure there it isn't quite the same atmosphere as a traditional Mexican restaurant but I like the brighter atmosphere and more spacious dining area. I guess it's something that makes this location stand out compared to many of the others around the area so that stands out. The service was about the same as the other location along Concord pike. The server made sure I was taken care of and answered any questions I had on the menu items. Overall I had a good experience with the service here. Food I rated a little higher and that was likely due to the entree I choice this time, picking a burrito smothered in mole. While I don't remember the burrito itself other than the meat was moist and tender and well seasoned, the mole is what really stands out to me. It added a volume of flavor and a little bit of heat to the dish and I savored it. Probably a dish I would order back at the other location to see if it's just as good. And I would definitely want to explore more of the menu on a future visit. As with the other location, La Tolteca is a good Mexican restaurant in the Wilmington area to visit and one I will likely come back to...
