The Dove Diner Restaurant — Restaurant in Delaware

I never write reviews but I feel something needs to be said about the manager of this establishment. My husband served in the military active duty Marine Corps for 9 years including multiple deployments over seas. After returning home and furthering his education, he continues to serve in the military as an attorney. My husband, mother, and two little ones decided to try this restaurant yesterday morning. The food was good, the waitress was very good with our extremely talkative 2 and 3 year olds, she also mentioned there was a military discount. When my husband went to pay the check to the manager, he mentioned the military discount. The manager’s response was, it doesn’t apply to breakfast. Since this is a diner and open 24hrs, my husband asked if it was just breakfast food or hours. Manager didn’t answer the question, he basically said he’s the manager and he makes the policy and it doesn’t matter what the waitress said. (Though he couldn’t state what the policy was) He was very rude and did not return the same respect that was given to him. My husband is extremely humble, he does not feel entitled to a military discount. (Although looking at his military accomplishments anyone would say otherwise) If the discount is not offered, it’s not a big deal. But for a military discount to be determined based on appearance, as that seemed to be the only determining factor and our skin color being the only differentiating one, is so unsettling. I fell in love with this place during my days studying at the Wilmington University New Castle campus which is a few blocks down the road. There's a certain charm about it that I love, but I can understand why a lot of people wouldn't; tastes differ. Food has always been delicious. The baked goods I especially love, and they're a bargain. You get a HUGE slice of cake if you order the cake.

As other reviewers have pointed out, the menu is very big. I think this can be a turn off to a lot of people who prefer a narrow, more specialized menu. I haven't been back into the kitchen but I suspect they use a lot of frozen and pre-packaged foods. If that's not your thing and you would prefer fresh food, best move on somewhere else. For me, I like a large menu and fast service.

There seems to be a lot of turnover with the waitstaff; I've been in there many times at and see a lot of different waiters and waitresses. That could also be due to the 24x7 operating hours. I've had only one really bad experience with the waitstaff over the course of about 30 visits, when a new waitress got my order wrong. I think some of the negative reviews here may have been unlucky that their only visit turned out the same way.

Overall, I would say that this is a great DINER. And you need to make that distinction. It is not fine dining, it is decent dining. Like TGI Fridays, or Applebees, or Waffle House. You need to know what you're really in...

Best breakfast we have had from a food establishment in a very long time. Don’t hesitate in trying their food. You won’t regret it! I had the French toast, eggs over medium and bacon. The french toast was fluffy and just delicious point blank. They have whipped butter which really added to the flavor of the French toast too. The eggs were perfectly cooked and the bacon was exactly what you should expect. Crispy and flavorful. I tried a bit of my husband’s home fries and they were very good. My husband had the hungry man’s meal and he devoured every bit that he could. He also said it’s everything he could have hoped for in a breakfast. My mother had the cream chip beef, home fries and poached eggs. I didn’t get a picture of her meal but I wish I had. I don’t even like cream chip beef but it look delicious. She really enjoyed it. She ate down the entire thing. My son had the wings which also came with a salad. They too looked and smelled absolutely scrumptious. I didn’t get a picture of his wings because he started right in on them. And he said they were so good. Everything we all had was just absolutely satisfying and filling. They’re a little pricey but so so so worth it. Who ever their cook is needs a raise immediately. Excellent food. We got delivery and it was still fresh and hot on arrival.
