I am instantly a big fan of Hoochies for quality seafood and a relaxing and casual atmosphere. We were close by enjoying some cold brews and searched for a spot to get some dinner. Fortunately we found that Hoochies had great reviews, and they were not lying.
I ordered the shrimp boil which came with a great portion of shrimp, potatoes and a small piece of corn. When you order you can get it regular or spicy, or course I got it spicy. The shrimp were excellent and cooked properly. The seasoning on the shrimp added amazing amounts of flavor that penetrated into the meat, not just sitting on the shell The seasoning made my lips burn and was very satisfying on the heat scale. Beware not to rub your eyes, even if you have washed your hands with soap and water for a while after having this dish.
I also got some oysters and was please with them. You can get them prepared in multiple different ways, but I love them on the half shell over ice. They were shucked very cleanly and were easy to enjoy with a little of the provided cocktail sauce and horseradish. You can order them individually so you can get exactly what you are wanting. It felt like they normally have multiple species of oysters, but it was Blue Point oysters on our mid june visit.
My family order the shrimp tacos and were very pleased with them. The taco is filled with delicious shrimp with cilantro, avocado and a delicious sauce. When you get everything into a single bite it is delicious. It was served with a Spanish style rice that was not tomato based and packed some great flavors.
We found that the staff was very friendly and took good care of you, while all the time moving food out to to tables. They also had plenty of staff working to make sure that things ran smoothly. There was plenty of seating while we were there and the...
Read moreStopped in here after a walk around the square. Really good food, generous portions, a good bit of seating inside and out.
Most of the inside tables and all those outside are bench style - think picnic tables with unattached benches. Didn’t seem the staff kept the condiments, salt and pepper properly set but there are extras available inside so you can pick them up. There are maybe 6-8 tables outside seating 4 each.
Portions are generous and reasonably priced. We had a side order of hush puppies and got a pile of nicely fried, tender pups. They aren’t crispy but I suspect you could ask that they be forgotten in the fryer a while. We also tacos that are available as fish, shrimp, crab and a couple other options. Again the portions are generous and each taco has two tortillas and there’s enough filling to make the extra. You get two tacos and you can mix and match the proteins - I got a fish and shrimp.
We also had the grilled fish of the day which on our visit was haddock. Cole slaw and seasoned rice were the sides. Again, good size portion and well seasoned.
Service was quick and food was the proper temp.
I couldn’t give 5 stars because they have two menus. A paper one at the tables and in a bucket as you enter, then a board above the order counter. Several items are $1 - $2 less on the paper menu, so the first menu you see, than on the board above the counter. I mentors it to them and they were aware. If you’re aware then...
Read moreHaving been part of the food and restaurant culture for the most of our lives, my wife and I are always on the lookout for a truly unique restaurant with great food. And in the seafood category, I believe we've finally found that place right here in our own backyard. Hoochies Oyster House if one of those places where we could eat almost every day. We absolutely love both the food and al fresco dining on the porch.
On our first visit a couple of weeks ago, we began our dinner with a dozen oysters on the half-shell, after which we each had one of their amazing Shrimp Cocktails. The oysters were extremely fresh, plump, and delicious with all of the lime, lemon, horseradish and cocktail sauce your heart and tastebuds desire. The Shrimp Cocktail was served sushi style in an ice cold beer mug--outrageously delicious! We also shared a three item fried Combo Basket with four oysters, three shrimp, a large catfish fillet, and a pile of steak fries. To wash all of this food down we enjoyed on of their ice cold Texas beers.
On our second visit, we decided to pick up a couple of Combo Baskets, and some Rice & Beans, and enjoy them at home in front of our new flat screen TV. Again, the food was absolutely delicious, but I did miss the cold beer.
Hoochies Oyster House is a great place, with great food. Another recent Denton restaurant hit that we will be frequenting often. Thanks John for bring us...
