The Hungry Beard Honest food review for Oldwest Cafe of Denton I’m reviewing this for their breakfast/brunch
Food: 4.2 A very good brunch/breakfast spot. I ordered an array to really get a feel for the place. The menu is extravagant..took me some time. The flap jack was great. Huge portion, great flavor. Not too dry. Biscuits and sausage gravy were good. Biscuit was soft/thick and gravy was a good consistency. The bacon wasn’t as crispy as I like and was thicker cut, so had a bit of a meaty chew to it. The fried potatoes were delicious and crispy. Honestly probably the best ones I’ve had, most places are soggy. The ham was mid. Not my favorite. I ordered over easy eggs and they were very watery once cut. The whites weren’t done (sigh). Waitress quickly brought me over medium (Which shouldn’t be the doneness of the white. Over easy eggs have a runny yolk, while over medium eggs have a slightly more cooked, jammy yolk). Nonetheless they were better and more so what the over easy should have been. Be advised when ordering them this way. Ramsey does say a true test for a chef is make him cook an egg! French toast was excellent, and the fruit was fresh. Other than the egg debacle, I can see why so many people eat here. Huge portions, large menu to cater to a lot of different people, and the food is well above chain breakfast spots. Not innovative, but good!
Service: 4.0 Nothing spectacular here to report, but the job was done. She asked how our food was and I gave my feedback on the eggs. She quickly offered to remake them.
Atmosphere: 3.6 I ate here for Tuesday brunch. It was still pretty busy and loud. They have lots of seating (booths as well). It appeared clean. Decor gives me Cracker Barrel vibes. Lots of families, kids, & babies. If this describes you, you’ll fit in just fine! Hard to find places to bring kids/big families, and this is a good breakfast spot with a menu that will appeal to a lot of variety of people. If you’re looking for a romantic brunch spot though this isn’t the place.
Overall: 4.0 Good breakfast/brunch spot for Denton, and can see why so many people eat here. It’s not on my best breakfast spots, but it’s well above mid. Bring...
Read moreWould've given more stars, but due to the manager I just couldn't'. The food is always great and so is the staff. But after dealing with the manager and seeing his values, we were quite very disappointed. A customer had left their dog outside in a car for over 45 minutes in 85+ degree weather and we brought it up to the restaurant's attention if they could please find the owner. Nothing was done. Went back to see what was taking so long, found out the manager didn't want to do anything about it! How absolutely disgusting! We contacted animal control to try to get them to come out to get the dog out. We didn't know how long it would take animal control because it was only 1 person on call. So I personally spoke to the manager and his words were that he cannot go to every table to disturb his customers to find out whose car the poor dog was in and that anything outside of the restaurant was out of his hands, so he wasn't going to do absolutely anything about it. What a freaking shame! There were plenty of ways to very discreetly and kindly find out who's car it was. But shortly we found out that the head honcho was there, so I guess his values were more important to not cause a scene in front of her rather than to save an animal's life. I now see your values. With time running out my husband didn't stall and finally went into the restaurant and yelled "who owns the Silver Toyota TRD needs to go get their dog out of the car cause it's dying from the heat!" Quietly and quickly the owner got up and went outside to turn on his car for the dog.
The people of Denton greatly value animals very much. Please do not let this type of action happen again. Animals are precious lives too and it happened in your parking lot. If it was a child, would you have stepped forward or done the same and...
Read moreMost amazing experience ever! My wife and I were passing by on our way back home and saw the great reviews. We decided to give this place a try and it did not dissappoint. Our server Logan was very informative, very attentive, very helpful, and very patient. The food tasted like it was made with love. Very tasty indeed. We started with 2 of their house blend iced coffees. I had the German Chocolate Mocha while my wife had the iced Creme Brulee. Both served with oatmilk accompanied with a biscuit & sausage gravy, which is an open-face biscuit topped with homemade sausage gravy. I had the WILD WEST. A 4 egg omelet with bacon, ham, sausage, bell pepper, onion, mushroom, tomato, jalapenos, hashbrowns & 3 cheese blend. It's served with 2 breakfast sides(Fried Potatoes & a Fresh Baked Iced Cinnamon Roll) and salsa. My wife had the RUSTLER. 2 same pancakes of your choice, 2 eggs, & 2 bacon or sausage & 1 breakfast side(hashbrowns) with a side of beans. Everything was amazing. The Owner was also very kind, attentive and very humble. He told us about his other locations in the DFW area. We told him that it would be closer to home but we rather visit his Denton location better. Not to mention, it's the only location with...
