Chili verde is something one encounters a lot in Denver- what does it mean? Before coming to La Fuente I thought it was the sauce that pork shoulder was braised in- essentially a salsa verde (tomatillo, onion, garlic, cilantro, jalapeño/serrano) but this restaurant served us huevos rancheros drowned in something with tomatoes in it, sans pork, apparently thickened with something- either corn or flour (I didn't ask). It didnt taste horrible, but such is not the phrase one generally seeks to describe the ideal breakfast, let alone the halfway good one. The best part of this particular menu item was the frijoles refritos, which had a good bacon back to them.
The tacos are something else entirely- the carnitas were crispy, the tripa as well. The campechanos had a good char on the chorizo served with the steak. The buche was a bit tacky, though still delicious- but it was on the spectrum of flavor where carnitas are king in this instance.
As for the accompanying salsas, the chile de arbol (red) variety was pretty spicy, seemingly without garlic, mostly adding toasted chile flavor and spice. The verde was pretty so-so, tangy but also without garlic- this is a common thing to encounter in many taqueria salsas- perhaps there is a tradition I am unaware of. At any rate, the hours of business and availability of uniquely delicious taco meats make this joint worth visiting.
Would have loved to order some chilaquiles here, pero...
Read moreMy wife and I had lunch here today and we were very disappointed in our meal and the service. I had a smothered deluxe burrito and my burrito came out with 5 pieces of cheese and a few pieces of lettuce at the end of the plate. My wife's burrito looked similar and when we tried to mention it to the waitress she said she couldn't do anything about it and walked away while we were still talking to her. We have both had indigestion from the food we ate. We had been regular customers for a couple of years, and have noticed the portion sizes quality of food has declined while the prices have increased. Today was our last visit to this declining restaurant. This was first posted on Yelp June 2015 and I have not returned. The prices have continued to rise and several former customers have told me the quality of food has declined as the prics have risen. They also stopped going back. At the time...
Read moreWell food was alright quite frankly rather bland for Mexican. I am Mexican by vfc the way!! Any how, kids meals were 6.25 plus 2.00 for drink. Very small portions more for small kids 6-8 mine we 10-11 were still hungry. My husband ordered a Mexican hamburger it was a hamburger patty in a tortilla smothered, totally a burrito. Then mine was a lkl right the chilie relleno puro masa. The only reason we went was because I had a bogo coupon so I figured if we didnt like it we didnt have to pay full price for it. I was told the app that had coupon was expired but she would take some off she took $4 off which the coupon was buy and entree and get one free up to $7 so I understand it's for the lowest entrees which were the kids meals so it should have been 6.25 off not 4. Either way we live n learn, and I love that we can review for this...
