I got three donuts: Boston cream, pistachio, brownbutter salt. To start, all the donuts are salty. Make sense given the store name. All the coating have good amount of salt in them but not overpowering! I usually don’t like cakey donuts but it was actually my fav. Moist, almost flavorless donut paired very well with flavorful brown butter icing, and the icing had strong brown butter flavor too. Pistachio donut was my most excited item but it was kinda disappointing. Pistachio flavor was not strong (bottom of the donut was covered with pieces of pistachio) and the donut was not as moist and I hoped for. I love dense textured donuts and they would have worked great if they were more moist. Also, the donut itself tasted slightly over-proofed. Boston cream was a delightful surprise! I think this donut explained what this donut shop is going for? Its simple but better. The chocolate icing gave off dark chocolate ganache (salty still but great) flavor, very deep chocolatey flavor. The custard inside was “liquidy-er” then I expected (expected more of pastry cream consistency, idk why) but it was not sweet and complemented icing very well. Also, with the filling, I didn’t noticed the issues I had with the pistachios donut. ( lingering taste if over-proofed dough still exists) These were good donuts but with the price tag of over $4 per donut, expectations are high, and over-proofed dough taste really wasn’t it for me. I will prob return in near future and see if this is just the flavor of dough they...
Read moreWe had so much hope for this shop, since they did such a good job on social media hyping up the grand opening. We live on the street, so we witnessed the out-the-door line during opening weekend but were somehow able to get in and out of line on a Sat morning within 20 min. Once near the door, the manager (?) greeted and spoke to us about the opening and the unique-ness of their donuts (all Brioche dough) so we were excited. However, we were sorely disappointed by the overall quality and texture of the donuts themselves... I understand that baking/getting dough consistency right is difficult at elevation, but the donuts were crumbly (not in a good cake donut-y way), dense, dry, and the flavors (though unique) were not quite strong enough. We ordered 4 of their specialty donuts + the EBTB Kragel and Ham & Swiss croissant (for $35…. YEESH!) and didn’t end up finishing the donuts because we were so dissatisfied. I truly do hope they improve their recipe because we need a good donut shop on Tennyson, but the street’s baked good scene is just too good to compete with these donuts. Lastly, I don’t like to end negatively, so I gave 2 stars because the shop’s vibe and team were pleasant...
Read moreCame in this morning for National Donut Day, figured I’d treat myself to their maple french toast donut. Big mistake. The name “The Salty” was a little too on the nose—this thing was way more salty than sweet, which is not what I’m looking for in a donut. The dough didn’t even taste fried; it legit just tasted like a piece of bread someone slathered cream on. And that cream? It made the whole thing soggy. I’d rather have a simple glazed donut from King Soopers, and that’s saying something.
Honestly, this place feels like it’s trying way too hard to be bougie. All aesthetic, no flavor. I miss when this spot was an antique shop. It had charm. Now it just feels like another piece of this weird gentrification puzzle. They put a Sweetgreen right next to it—are you kidding me? Who asked for that?
If any developers or city planners are reading this: please, just give us a classic diner-style donut shop. No frills. Just good coffee and donuts that taste like donuts. That’d be much...
