Such a cool place with great pizza. Blake was our server last time and he was spot on. Jon Ham was playing like 10 odd instruments live and the music was fun and engaging. Inside and outside seating, and both have their advantages. Tennyson is a great street to walk before or after. They always have a slice of the day, and the goat cheese/basil one they had Friday was amazing. HOUSE made hot sauce (TWO options) which was amazing and override my only two, minor flaws in the place. Their IPA's are heavily East Coast biased, but get the Stonefly if you are West Coast driven like me. The only other thing is that you can't get pizza by the slice. So, either you invest in the pizza for two people, or hope you like the slice of the day. Still, I have to give the place 5 stars. Great staff, great vibe, and you should go.
Just went again, so adding to it: This place has totally grown on me. It is tough to get a bar seat, but we have a better experience when we can pull it off. The slice of the day is always fun to find out what it is, they have happy hour specials that shave a buck off most drinks, and make sure to ask for the kitchen's hot sauce. I just bought a container of it so I can have it at home. It is magical. If you are an IPA drinker, they frequently have Pliny the Elder on tap, but they have plenty of other choices too. If your partner in crime doesn't drink beer, they have cocktails on tap, which is fun. Their patio was just redone and sometimes has live music. Amy was our bartender and was on point with personality and efficiency during our eating experience. Definitely recommend.
My most recent visit: Perfect visit today. Thank you, Crystal, for the personable, but not intrusive service. I admit that I don't go in this place unless A) they have a live band on the patio or B) they have bar seats (love the most left seat but the place is stellar regardless), or C) if you call and the slice of the day has pepperoni, banana peppers, and mozzarella. Great selection of beer, and I will say that any place that carries Pliny the Elder for a reasonable price is...the bomb. Titos on tap, great regular crew, and...wait for it...the house made hot sauce is only rivaled by Tacos Tequilas Whiskey on 32nd. Seriously, the hot sauce is worth going to the place alone. I have bought it in bulk, and it goes on everything. You HAVE to either like hops or pie. So...stop reading my review and go there right now. Definitely recommend and...
Read moreI've generally had great experiences at Hops & Pie- I've been around half a dozen times, getting a variety of pizza, apps, and drinks.
The Thursday deal on Detroit-style pizza is hard to beat. The NY pizza is good, and you can get some interesting variations if you ask for the slice-of-the-day.
The atmosphere outside I think is a lot more preferable to inside, where it feels way too congested, especially if you're by the bar.
One issue I did have was related to their "Garlicky Cheese Bread" appetizer. Nowhere on the menu does it say that it's covered in paprika, yet when it arrived I legitimately thought I was given the wrong item. My server confirmed it usually comes with it. If this was mentioned on the menu, I would have asked for it without, as it really does change the flavor. The taste is fine, but for 6 relatively small pieces you're paying almost $12, so it's $2 for each small piece of bread. That's a LOT, especially when you can get a whole small pizza for $13. I won't be getting it again for all of the above reasons, so just buyer beware. You can see pictures of the bread under the review by Adam Follett, where there's a small cup of marinara + ranch. I think I'd be fine paying $5-6 for the appetizer, but $11.50? Woof.
I didn't have a HUGE problem with it, but I would expect an appetizer to be delivered to the table before the pizza. I got it in the opposite order.
I'd recommend this place for anybody who wants to have a nice atmosphere and sharing pizza/drinks with their friends. They have a nice little outdoor area where you can play cornhole if you want. Even on hot days the patio has misters going so it's not too hot-feeling.
Also keep in mind there's a 4% service charge added to your bill (you can ask for its removal, if you want to imagine the glares of staff). This is advertised pretty boldly at the bottom of the digital menu, so it's not a bait-and-switch like many other restaurants, though if you don't look at the whole menu it may be a surprise to you. Kudos to H&P for...
Read moreGood pizza, terrible service. I saw they offered homemade dill pickles on their menu and was thriled. They also say they have homemade bread and butter pickles and a dill pickle pasta salad, so clearly someone there shares my pickle obsession. So as I've done countless times at other pizza places, I asked if they could do a dill pickle pizza. (Love both?? Try it, but not here) I'm used to questionable looks when I order these. But the gal on the phone took it to a rude level. She said she didn't think so, as those aren't offered as a topping. (You should by the way) I said I know, but you have them.. right? She said she'd check with the kitchen. When she came back on the phone (I was ordering take out) she said they could, but next time they might be too busy and won't be able to do that. Um. What? Are you making the pickles special just for this order? Do you have to get them from off site? Do you have a strict pickle budget and can't go over for a pizza topping? Honestly, if I wasn't worried about someone spitting in my food, I would have responded with what I felt. Which was, oh, well I guess I won't ever come back then. Because that's basically what she was saying. The pizza and the pickles were great. If they just served that without the attitude I'd go back. But when Blue Pan is just down the street, I'll go out of my way for them. I just started working on Tennyson, and with so many options of eateries, the next time a customer asks me where where they should eat I'll be sure to send...
