Snobby, pretentious and unfriendly yuppie (yipster/fake yuppie hipster) kind of bar. I went here because the West End Tavern ( a place I like) was closed for some reason that night. Anyhow, I felt both staff and clientele were pretty stuck up and I definitely got the feeling that a blue collar Joe like me was definitely not cool enough to be drinking in this establishment. If I am in Berkeley area, I'll probably stick with West End, Midwestern Saloon or even the divey Berkeley Inn; a place where a low class blue collar guy like me is welcomed. It's hard to put the finger, but you kind of get feeling that most of people there know each other and you have to almost prove you are worthy there. Unless you fit into a certain socio-economic class you will definitely feel snubbed by the snobby pretentiousness of this place. Williams & Graham, even though more upscale than this place, I felt that the staff were warm , friendly and welcoming. The drinks at Williams & Graham are also much better. They didn't act like you were wasting their precious time when you tried engaging them and they acted interested in you. I'm sorry, but a tiny little bar room like this you are rubbing elbows with everyone and if they just ignore you and act irritate if you chat them up is pretty unwelcoming environment.
I also didn't particularly love the Tartarian drink I ordered. THey use very good quality booze and it is strong enough, but it was just way too sweet for being a whiskey based cocktail for my taste. I actually preferred my Old Fashioned at West End more.. Some people may like very sweet whiskey cocktails though and this may be up...
Read moreI was out with my father who does not like beer or wine, so we decided to hit up this cocktail bar. The menu was a little overwhelming at first. It was a very nice bar and we felt a little out of place. The bartender, however, made us feel right at home despite our indecisiveness when it came to ordering drinks. I found something I wanted out of the menu (Black Jack), but my wife wanted something that had Lavender Gin in it. My father just wanted Sambuca on the rocks with some water. The bartender asked my wife several questions and made a drink for her on the spot based on her preferences. Since they did not have any Sambuca, the bartender asked my father a few questions to figure out his preferences then made him a very tasty drink resembling a sambuca (he even put three coffee beans in it). For the next round, we ordered a Golden Gate, Árbol del Tule, and a Bodhi. All the drinks were fantastic. My wife LOVED the Bodhi (a chai tea drink). My father was very wary of the Golden Gate (similar to an amaretto sour) since it had frothed egg whites. The bartender did an amazing job quelling my father's concerns. The bartender then proceeded to give us a few tasters based on our own individual palate. It was a great experience for all of us. They are a little pricey, though about right for a nice cocktail bar. The best of part of this place? The service was extraordinary! We felt like it was our local bar that we frequent often. We will definitely return when we come...
Read moreVisited your establishment on Fri evening and was shocked that I was “required” to wear a mask when I walked from the front door to our spot at the bar. I notified the hostess/bartender that Denver had lifted the mask mandate. I was then told “well we are a small bar, so masks are required.” Then I looked across the bar it was packed with people sitting around your bar, with absolutely no one wearing a mask. This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. So it is required for me to wear a mask to enter your bar, or walk to the bathroom, but everyone sitting within 6’ or less of each other, all laughing and talking (or closer when the bar is full) is ok??? I won’t be coming back and I’ll be sure to share this with other friends who live in the Sunnyside/Berkeley/Highlands neighborhood. You need to educate yourselves in the efficacy of masks and Covid. Even the best masks only filter particles 3 microns in size while Covid is 0.06-0.14 microns in size. Stop the perpetuating the madness and mass psychosis. We have...
