F&O's / Felix and Oscars — Restaurant in Des Moines

I had a pretty bad experience here. I put in an order a 514 and it said it would take 60 to 90 minutes to get here which I already thought was a long time but that was fine. So I wait until about 75 minutes after I placed the order and I call just to verify that I had placed the order correctly because I had never ordered from the them before and I had done it online so I was worried that perhaps something got lost in translation. When I called up there they said that they did have my order but it has not even gone out the door yet so I asked to be transferred to the manager because I felt that it was going to be extremely late considering the lady had not even left and only had 15 minutes to get to my house let alone whatever orders she had prior to mine. On the phone he wanted to argue with me and say my order had been put in at 5:46 which may have been the case on their end of the servers but not on mine because I remember specifically after placing the order and I looked at my watch and saw it was 515 I was expecting my pizza around 615 to 7 o'clock. Upon discussing it with him I thought he was very rude and considering is the first time I had ever done business with them if he would've been polite and just explain to me you know sometimes things get busy I'm sorry you know we may have made a mistake I would have been more understanding but he was frankly a jerk and calling me a liar. This was the first time I had ever tried this restaurant and it will most certainly be the last. If the manager would've treated me with respect I would have been much more understanding. I've worked in restaurants throughout my lifetime and so if I feel like something is not right you should say something about it to make the restaurant a better place. This manager treated me like I was a liar and it felt like he was trying to cover his own but or his online ordering system was operating incorrectly. Either way I am a great restaurant customer and always tip very well because I have worked in restaurants before myself. But in this particular instance I felt very disrespected and I do not think that their management is up to par. Sidenote they also forgot the ketchup that I had requested twice in the order. Pre-review notes: I have eaten here probably about 50 times in the last 15 years. I always get the same thing but have tried other things that my friends and family have ordered. I love this place.

Food: I only ever get one thing here: The Cheese Topper. It's a Chicago-style deep dish, but with extra cheese on top so it goes crust-cheese-sause-cheese. Never seen so much ooey gooey cheese on a pizza before. It will change your life. They do have regular Chicago style and thin crust pizzas as well, and I've had them, but they aren't what's so special about F&O's. The deep dish crust is perfect -- flaky and firm but not greasy or crunchy. The sauce is superb. The cheese is top quality -- I mean not like aged French specialty cheese quality, but pizza cheese quality. If you like cheesy deep dish, the Cheese Topper is one of the best pizzas on the planet. It's the kind of people will freeze and send next-day air with dry ice at great expense to relatives and friends who have moved and are missing their F&O's fix -- literally, I've known it to happen. They do have a gluten free rice-based crust available, which I have also tried, and it's OK. But then, that's about the best review I can give of any gluten free pizza. All that said, though, if I want a thin or hand tossed pizza I go somewhere somewhere else. There's nothing wrong with theirs, it's good, it's just not the best in town, whereas their deep dish is without question the best in town if not in the state of Iowa.

Atmosphere: It's fine. They recently remodeled and it's pretty nice. There is a bar side to watch sports and have a beer or three (including gluten free and cider options), and there is a regular family side to the right. The place is clean and well kept. Only complaint is how damn cold they keep the AC set to in the summer.

Service: Typically very good. There is no pomp or frill, just a person who takes your order, never messes it up, keeps the refills coming as desired, and handles the check in a timely fashion. I don't think I've ever had a complaint about the service.

In fact, I don't think I've ever had a bad experience there...

OMG i absolutely love Felix & Oscar's!! We ordered takeout during quarantine and it was very delicious. First order we got two Italian Grinders (they are made with Graziano sausage, but honestly it wasn't too spicy - I don't like when my food is spicy to the point where I cannot enjoy the flavor, and this hits it right on the money!) that were huge, with lots of cheese on top. You can get their sandwiches with either a side salad or fries - and their fries are AMAZING!! They're similar to steak fries, but crispy on outside, soft on inside, PERFECT!!

2nd order we actually dined in, my daughter ordered the thin crust cheese pizza ( IT'S NOW HER ULTIMATE FAVORITE!), and she asks for F&O's ALL the time!! 😄 I ordered the Philly cheese steak (without the mushrooms/onions/green peppers) just the queso cheese and provolone on top and WOW - the meat is just top*notch, the cheese sauce is excellent!! They also have a chicken Philly I am still waiting to try. Another person ordered their Meatball sandwich & said it was delicious. We also ordered onion rings (&1.50 extra with the sandwich/side deal but worth it; Original is $11.99 w/fries or salad). Their onion rings are perfect, the small thin crispy kind! Love those ones!

The customer Service at this place is astounding: if they get even ONE small thing wrong, they not only fix it but go above & beyond to make their customers happy and to keep coming!! The waiter we had told us he'd been with the company for 27 years, which tells EVERYONE something about this establishment! He was very kind, and easy to chat with, enjoyable to be around. HOPE we have him next time we dine in, we REALLY like him!!!!

This place has amazing Pizza (thin, deep dish, etc), sandwiches (grinders, meatball, philly, tenderloins, etc), Salads, pastas, Burgers, an array of delectable Appetizers, desserts and so much more!!
