We ordered Chorizo Empanadas, Torta Especial and a kid's chick bowl. I got a "Reyes de Fuego" to drink. Malibu Passion Fruit, Myers Dark, Orange Juice, Pineapple juice and Tiki Bitters blended to a smooth, easy to drink concoction. Keep count because these can end your night too early. ;) My wife told me she would share, but the first bite she refused, which says a lot about what she thought. I eventually got a bite. Proper Empanadas are pastry shells stuffed with savory ingredients. In this case, chorizo protein and smoked white cheddar cheese with enough aji verde and garlic aioli to guarantee no bite was dry. Black salt finishes it off. It was served on a slaw of lettuce and tomatoes. The experience is similar to biting into a croissant and passing through the light layer into the savory flavors inside. The first thing I noticed about the children's bowl was the portion, definitely more than enough for a child. Marinated chicken served with sofrotos rice which was extra flavorful because it was prepared in chicken broth., with Queso flowing over the top and black beans in the bowl, but to the side to allow you to mix in the amount you think is correct. It also came with an included soft drink. I was really surprised about the Torta Especiales with chicken al pastor. Imagine a sandwich with small pieces of chicken, slices of avocado, shredded lettuce, refried beans, tomato, white onions and lots of chipotle mayo. That's a lot to imagine but the flavors merged well. It's definitely worth ordering again. I can't believe I'm about to say this about something served in a Mexican restaurant, but these are the best French fries I've ever had. They're the perfect mix of crispness on the outside and light, airy and fluffy on the inside. Everybody at the table stole some from me. The words "buttery" and "melt in your mouth" were used to describe French fries! These were the highlights, not because everything wasn't great, but these were whatever rises above great. For dessert we got a spiced brownie and ice cream to share. Before I ever saw it, the cinnamon scent told me this was going to be good. Cayenne pepper and chili powder gave it flavor, but it wasn't "hot" spicy at all. The brownie texture was similar to a heavy cake, much lighter than you'd expect from a brownie...but in a good way. This was all topped with 3 towers of whipped cream. This was definitely worth ordering...
Read moreUpdate: The owner was very kind to respond and apologize and make it up to us. I truly appreciate the time he took to reply as well as assure me that the staff was trained on how to deal with something like this in the future.
Original: Casa Tres Reyes is usually one of my go-to places, great vibe, good food, and friendly staff. But my recent visit for happy hour and dinner was unusually disappointing and a bit concerning.
It started off on an odd note when we were told they were out of limes, not a big deal, just unexpected for a place known for margaritas. The service was slow, and while the food was just okay this time, the real issue was what happened midway through our meal.
At some point, the kitchen began preparing grilled hot peppers in bulk, and the fumes filled the entire restaurant. It was strong enough that nearly every table around us started coughing, including ours. Even a few waitresses came out coughing and confirmed that many patrons were affected. Everyone at my table had burning throats and couldn’t stop coughing. One group near a door even opened the it themselves to get fresh air because the older guests at their table were having a worse reaction.
What was most surprising was the lack of response from management. No one came around to check on guests, no attempt was made to ventilate the space, and the kitchen activity continued as if nothing was wrong. It would have been nice if there had been an effort to alleviate the discomfort everyone was clearly experiencing.
Unfortunately, I was nauseous later that night and even the next day, my throat is still irritated. I’ve never had an experience like that at a restaurant.
Hoping this was just an off night and that the team takes this as constructive feedback to avoid something similar happening again. Casa Tres Reyes has always been great. I’d love to see it...
Read moreMy sister gifted my husband and I a gift card for Xmas. She works for three kings in south county another establishment with the same owners. The food and atmosphere at Three Kings is so great that we were thrilled to see they’d opened a Mexican restaurant as we love tacos! Just from walking up from the partying lot, I knew it would be great! The outside dining had lots of themed touches that were really nice! Soon as we walked in we were greeted and told of our wait time. we really appreciated that the hostess took our number and called us when our table was ready. We ended up sitting and waiting, we like to people watch :D the decor was gorgeous! I loved the succulent chandelier, the floral walls, the ceramic and the mosaic touches! All of their establishments are inviting and really create a nice atmosphere! Our server Charlie was friendly and knowledgeable regarding drinks and food! We each had a delicious margarita! The chips and salsa were fantastic! My husband ordered a smothered burrito and I opted for a taco plate. I was very impressed with the amount of options on the food especially for health conscious people- vegan, gluten free, etc! I loved that I could mix and match, I had a Baja fish taco and the vegan chorizo. Both were amazing! The slaw on the baja taco was sweet and crunchy! This was my first experience with vegan chorizo and it was the perfect amount of spicy! The plantains were delicious and basically became our dessert! We over indulged too much and skipped dessert, but we will be back soon so that we can order the Churros! Highly recommend checking out Tres Reyes and or Three Kings if you haven’t yet! You won’t be...
