"The Most Creative Fine Dining in Detroit | Freya"

I generally am not one to write reviews, but Freya deserves one. My wife and I went out for our first date since our baby was born as a celebration and we chose Freya as our venue. My wife has a significant dairy allergy, sheâs allergic to dairy protein and will be sick for days if she consumes it, so finding a tasting restaurant with a vegan option for every course was extremely appealing to us because we knew she could safely eat. To briefly summarize Iâll just say that this was the best dining experience my wife and I have ever had. The service was unparalleled and the food was some of the best Iâve ever had. Any time you got up to use the restroom, you came back to a folder napkin. Anytime my wife came back a server also came to pull out her chair. They knew we were celebrating our babyâs birth and congratulated us several times, started our evening off with a toast and even some of the waitresses deeply complimented my wife and made her feel so confident and seen. Regarding the food, weâve only been to one other tasting restaurant, which entirely vegan, out in Portland, Oregon and this meal significantly outclassed it. The first bite of each course was purely joyful, almost like the feeling of taking the first bite of a nostalgic childhood meal you havenât had in a long time. The flavors were incredible and complex, yet clear and distinct. Their menu shifts, but I was able to have their grilled octopus and it was probably my favorite dish throughout my lifetime this far, truly was that good. My wife had similar experiences with their vegan menu, each course seemed to best the previous one. I could go on in showering compliments, but all I can say is that I highly recommend this establishment. For anyone this would be an amazing experience, but if you have an allergy then this is probably one of the best places to go. It was clear they put a lot of attention to detail regarding their guests and their allergies and were extremely accommodating. There was never a moment of concern that my wife was going to consume something unsafe for her, which made the time all the more fun and relaxing.

Me and my partner went here for dinner and it was truly an amazing experience. We had an 8pm reservation (I highly recommend a reservation for this restaurant.) Our table wasn't ready yet so the host kindly showed us to their sister bar, which is connected to them called the Dragonfly, so that we could get drinks while we waited. They also have a cute lounge area if you don't want to grab a drink while you wait. Once the table was ready maybe 10 minutes after 8pm, the host came back to get us and sat us at our table. We were offer a complementary choice of sparkling wine or a nonalcoholic option to start our experience which I thought was a very nice touch. We also had two servers who could help us which made our service fast and both were very friendly. After we placed our order for all of our courses, they start you with bread/butter and a salad while you wait for your first course. We picked different things from each course so we could share and try each others dishes. The size of the food starts smaller and gradually gets bigger, the sizes of the dishes are good to make sure you are full but we didn't have any left overs. My favorite dishes were course 1- oysters (I ate one so fast before I remembered to take a picture) and my 4th course which, I picked the Steelhead Trout(Get it! Truly amazing). The price for dinner is always the same $90 for the 5 course meal and you can choose to add either a cocktail or wine pairing at $50 to go with that. We opted to just order drinks off the menu, which we were happy with. Overall Freya was great and worth every penny, but you will be spending at least $100 per person so maybe for more of a special occasion dinner or when you want to really treat yourself and others.

Preface: This isn't Applebee's... so I'm Definity going to be more particular. We're not going to take cost into account here because this is 5 Star, and you don't go somewhere like this and complain that the single bite tasting is overpriced. The prices are what they are. Saying that, the price is set walking in the door, if you aren't familiar with a prix fixe menu, it means you pay one price for the meal and it comes with multiple courses. When I went it was 5 courses. The good: The presentation, service and atmosphere are 5 stars hands down. Every member of the staff was on point, the experience was among the best in Detroit. You can see from the photo's the amount of effort put into everything they do here, right down to a birthday card. Amazing. The Bad: Ok I'm nitpicking, but at this level, that's what you do. The temperature of some of these dishes was close to room temperature, given the detail, perhaps it was just the final presentation taking a bit too long, but I don't think anything we had was hot, including the steak. The food was a tad under seasoned FOR ME. Now there are subtleties that are lost to too much salt, so I'm not saying this chef did anything wrong, but I'd have preferred a bit more salt to some of the dishes. I honestly think those are the only negatives I have here, and for some, this may be exactly what you're looking for. The Ugly: Not a thing. Everything here is visually stunning. The experience: I just want to reiterate, this is an experience not a meal, and for what it was, I'd go back. If you're hungry, don't expect to leave full. If you're looking for a 5 star restaurant experience without dropping huge pockets full of cash, go do it. It's a fun experience.

Two friends and I had an excellent dinner at Freya at the end of summer! One of us ate omnivorously, the other two ate pescatarian. That said, I found the vegetable-forward dishes to be best, even when they weren't veg/vegan. From the night's menu (see photo), I had the scallop (silky and delicious), zucchini (amazing texture and flavor!), potato (would have drunk the dill sauce out of the vessel if I could!), halibut (least-successful dish, somewhat dry), and the pecan dessert (amazing! Standout! Wish for the recipe!!!). You pay a $25/person deposit, plus a small processing fee, when you reserve. At that time, you also select omnivore/pescatarian/vegan for each member of your party. You can also add optional drink packages when reserving. They also share parking tips when then finalize your res. Upon being seated, your deposit is refunded. We were brought house-made bread with compound butter (strawberry), as well as a welcome glass of champagne or non-alcoholic aperitif. Then you review the night's menu and order all five courses at once; we were able to mix and match omnivore/pescatarian/vegan. They also brought a lovely salad to the table, for family-style service. The restaurant staff are friendly and welcoming, and the place has a relaxed ambiance. We were each given a wrapped corn cake to take home; I had it with yogurt for breakfast the next day, it was fluffy and flavorful. My meal ($85 five-course) checked out to about $110 with tax and 22% service (aka gratuity). Worth it. A very satisfying meal, and a lovely dining experience!
