Ok so.... Joe Louis was great food 10/10 definitely recommend I had the catfish over rice with the gumbo, and I got a biscuit sandwhich with eggs and spicy beef sausage. We also got cinnamon roll pancakes side of eggs and bacon (normal breakfast stuff)
Downside: while I know it was Sunday.... I got there and checked in at 11am. She said about 25 minutes. By 12 I had no text to come in so I went in, and the host say "oh yall can come in!"... ironic... I know. I also Noticed there were about 4 tables open).
We sat down at 12... got a water and coffee for me... put our order in maybe 12:10. We seen a party of 8 come in, a couple more guests too. They all started to get their food, well before us who had already been there. At 12:52 we finally get our food after I had to ask the host what the hold up was. Ok fine, some of the food finally starts to come, it's HOT which is a plus!
I asked another waitress/host what the hold up was and was told well the kitchen is run different, so it's really depending on where you sit. I look so confused like huh?? So the ticket system doenst print in a first in first out order so the kitchen knows what needs to be sent out first? Here we have a two person table that had about a 25-30 minute head start on an 8 person table and they still were served well before we were. She also went on to say that the bar/window seats will eat first because it's "first come first serve" which made absolutely no sense to me at all.
I'm understandable! And really easy going, a simple "we are a little backed up in the kitchen, there might be a little wait" would have went a long way. Our waitress came over maybe once to check on us (once food came) and only offered a coffee/water refill after sitting and waiting on food for 45-50 minutes. No issues...again I'm understanding and easy going, still tipped her because I understand the service industry.
Full review 8.5/10 becuse of the time.. outside of that they would be 10/10 straight across the board! Food was phenomenal, portion sizes were great, and the atmosphere is pleasant. I definitely plan on going back and trying other menu items but I really hope they figure out timing and working orders first in first out. I'll also pack my sleeping bag and camp in the front so I'm the first on the list and sitting on the right side of...

Made an order for carry out at 10:00 a.m. through the website with my order receipt informing me I could expect my order to be ready from anywhere between 11:05 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. I show up at 11:05 expecting to wait at least 10 minutes. Fast forward to 11:25 and my order still is not ready. The hostess assures me I should expect to receive a text telling me my order is ready. I wait another 10 minutes and go up to the hostess again to inquire about my order. She repeats what she told me before. Come 12:00 p.m. and there is still no word of my order. Mind you this is a carryout order we're talking about. There have been people who have waited less time to be seated in the actual restaurant and I'm just trying to get my stuff after having already ordered my food 2 hours prior. I go up to the hostess a third time and she finally decides to check in with the cooks about my order. She returns to the front desk and hands me my bag of food wordlessly, nary a "sorry for the wait" uttered; no acknowledgment of how long I've had to wait. I proceed to check the bag to make sure everything's there because the last thing I need after waiting nearly an hour is to come back home only to realize I didn't get what I paid for. Of the three items I ordered (banana French toast, fries, and turkey sausage), only two were in the bag and even then it didn't seem like it was fresh (the fries were more like limp noodles than anything, not to mention lukewarm). At this point I'm hungry and annoyed so I simply asked the hostess to give me the turkey sausages that I ordered. She makes another trip to the back and returns with my sausages. First thing I do after getting back in my car is tasting the food to see if this was at all worth the wait. I took one bite out of the sausage and blanched at how cold it was, as if my food had been sitting there the whole time I was waiting. I can honestly say this was a complete waste of time. Who knows how long I would have waited if I didn't continuously ask them about what was going on...
Read moreAnother Detroit favorite delivering a hearty breakfast! Be prepared to wait, no reservations. Also tip is included on weekends and large parties. There's a table limit for dining too.
Named after famous Detroit boxer the diner showcases Joe Louis memorabilia in its bar tops which face the interior lobby waiting area only for dine in customers. You'll be seating inside of a boxing ring! Upon entering through the door, you're walking into the dining area which is built like the front of a house porch. Its truly unique structure and decor could be a museum exhibit!
It was a bit confusing based on how the layout is. The hostess ask you to wait in the boxing ring hall area. Next 20 mins or so, came out to announce bar seating along the windows were open seating and asked for volunteers instead of just taking the next groups on the waitlist.
Now to the menu, entrees are named in boxing lingo to follow the theme. It's a wide range of griddle, omelette, skillets with seafood options, salads, turkey legs and other southern influenced dishes. Chicken & waffles is what they're known for but biscuits and Cajun flavor is on the menu too! Our waiter, Paul, looked like he was hot but he was personable and provided what needed in spurts. We got our plates before silverware and my milk which I asked for delivery during my meal took a minute as well.
I had to try the Martha's Seafood skillet.. it had all the ingredients I was in the mood for: shrimp, blackened salmon, potatoes, egg and spinach. Sound good. Every fork full was a party! It was sooo good. The dish overall was flavorful. The peppers, onions and hollandaise wrapped the dish up nicely. I added a side Red Velvet waffle (drizzled with cream cheese). Can we say jackpot! My belly thanked me!
My companion had chicken with their banana foster French toast... another winner! Executed perfectly with banana sauce and cinnamon packed FT! The chicken was seasoned with a bit of...
