Mezcal Mexican Bar and Grill — Restaurant in DeWitt

While the food is good, I had significant problems with my experience here.

First, they do have a sign that states they had to increase their menu prices “slightly”. I come to find out, they didn’t update these price changes on the menu. An item I ordered that stated $10.50 on the menu turned out to be $14.60 on the check. I do not agree that is a “slightly” increased price, and it is a bit deceitful to not have it listed correctly on the menu.

Second, I ordered a coke as my beverage to drink, and the waiter poured it from a classic glass bottle. I had two of these drinks, only to come to find I was charged $3.65 twice for these drinks. I’m not sure if I’ve been at a restaurant that prices soft drinks like this, but if I had known this is how it was, I would have just ordered water as having to pay for each soft drink like this is unusual and in my opinion, slightly predatory as it is very different from restaurant standards and was not disclosed I would have to pay each time.

Besides these two issues, the food was good and the restaurant was a good dining experience.

We have been to this restaurant at least a dozen times. Last visit was on 7/15/25. Never again. I ordered a Vegetarian taco salad listed on the menu for $7.50. I was charged $9.40. Hubby ordered a Chicken Fajita Burrito Grande for $10.00. He was charged $13.85. When we complained, the waitress pointed to a sign on the door that said, "due to rising costs we will need to charge slightly higher prices than previously." We did not see this sign, coming into the restaurant, which is our fault. However, there was no indication of the new prices on the menus, nor what percent increase in the food prices. In summary, I had a 20.2% increase in my food price; my husband had a 27.8% increase in his food price . The inconsistent percent increase between the two dishes, doesn't even make sense. And the lack of price increase on the signage and on the menus is deceptive advertising! I'll go a step further and report them to the BBB, (update: I have) as well, and perhaps even to the Iowa Attorney General's office (update: I have). What a bunch of...

We were charged nearly double the prices on the menu ! My meal is priced at $8.00 on the menu. Online the same meal is priced $9.99. I was charged $14.10! When asked, I was told that their prices had changed and they had not gotten their new menus and there is a sign on the door. When I left I looked. The sign is among a very busy area where there lots of signs posted, and not where it would catch the eye quickly. One would have to look for it. A note in the current menu and/or the waiter advising us of the price changes would have been advisable. Our group was charged nearly DOUBLE for our meals - and the steak that was ordered was awful - and $6.00 more! Thank goodness we all ordered water or it would have been even worse. Although I didn't look to see if we were charged for the lemon in our water. Come on Mez Cal. I used to enjoy coming there but you have lost...
