I am not a local. I came from NYC to experience Miami for the first time. There are so many great eats in Miami. This restaurant was the one sushi place I decided to try. My parents have worked as sushi chefs for 7 years and they used that knowledge to make a successful sushi catering business for the next 20+ years. Humbly, I would like to think I know my sushi, from the years I’ve eaten it and the experience my family has in it, along with other family friends involved in the sushi business.
We ordered the elevation, salmon roll, seaweed salad, and udon. The fish itself was fresh. I had no significant issues with it. Unfortunately, there are two significant parts to the sushi roll. The fish, but also the rice. You may taste great quality fish, but the rice engulfs it, and compliments the entire experience. The rice should be fluffy, voluminous, soft, and full-grained. Furthermore, sushi rice should be mixed with vinegar. From both my rolls, and from observing the photos closely to match what I had, it seems they cook the rice the same way for all their rolls. The rice is small-grained, mushed together, lacks volume, and is cooked dry. I cannot pinpoint exactly where the issue lies but I can list factors; whether it be: Poor rice brand, not enough water used to cook with the rice (causing it to dry), not having a good rice cooker, or perhaps they cook their rice in a pot and not in a rice cooker? I also did not taste other ingredients like vinegar, that should be mixed with sushi rice.
Don’t get me wrong, the sushi is edible. If I had another one of their specialty rolls in front of me and I was hungry, I would still eat it. It is saddening for me to say however, that out of all the meals I’ve had in Miami for this 1 week trip, this one disappointed me the most.
For the less relevant parts of the meal, I actually enjoyed the udon and seaweed salad. The noodle was cooked well and the soup was hearty. However, everytime I’ve ordered udon at a restaurant, there is almost always enough, for the 1 bowl to be a meal by itself. They gave a very small portion of noodle, perhaps 1/4 of what I would expect it to be. My +1 complained of the seaweed salad being too oily. It was definitely atypical of the usual seaweed salad I’ve had as well but I enjoyed the flavor and didn’t mind it.
My conclusion is although this place isn’t “the worst” I definitely cannot recommend someone to pay $20-$22 for a specialty roll that I do not consider to be a complete sushi roll. This is my...
Read moreIn town on a business trip and decided to stop by here at 11:30 opening time for lunch. The miso soup and the tuna sushi were good. The Noe Roll and the Crispy Spicy Tuna Roll were disappointing, and this is coming from someone who loves sushi and eats it 3 to 4 times per week, and have had sushi all over the country. Normally after a disappointing visit like this I usually just tag it and warn my colleagues not to waste money at but the reason I decided to take time to leave a review is the downright inattentive, rude, and disrespectful service I received from the female server. She doesn't have her name on the receipt except it lists "Server: 2". My check number was 151947/1. I sat at Table 2. My receipt date/time 11/8/2018 11:40:16am. That server had a distracted, disinterested, distant, and zombie-like disposition. I sat a good 10 minutes before she asked what I wanted to drink. She had a look on her face and carried herself like she'd rather be home sleeping than working. I didn't want to leave a tip but I decided I'd leave a small $5 tip because the entire visit was not all that dreadful. The male staff who brought my miso soup over then ginger halfway through the meal was pleasant. I'm in town for a good while on business and I will never dine at this Kamiko Sushi Bar again. If the management of this restaurant cares about customer service then it would do well to sort out that...
Read moreFood has always been great here, but during my last visit I had an unpleasant experience after I got my check and realized that these folks now have decided to charge 6% for credit card use, on top of 8% taxes (when then tax rate in FL is 7%) and an automatic 18% gratuity on a simple lunch service. This type of charge usually applies to large parties. I looks like these folks are trying to inflate the bill to unsuspecting customers. After all, most patrons don't carefully review their check, much less even know how to calculate percentage. I complained to the staff, pointing out that the typical credit card fee is between 2-3%, and this charge should be part of their already high prices as a convenience for customers to be able to pay with credit / debit card. The other issue is that they do not have a notice anywhere on the menu or posted on the premises informing they charge a fee on card transactions, so that an informed customer can decide to pay the fee or dine elsewhere. They tried to downplay the issue, explaining that it was something that had been recently implemented. Their answer for the automatic 18% was that it is standard in many restaurants in Miami. I was able to have them modify the check, although they still charged me an extra 1% in taxes just because but I take the time to write this review so other customers are not taken...
