Having lived most of my life in the South, I sometimes miss things like catfish and decided to give this a try. The service couldn't have been better and the food was excellent. Room for improvement? Sure, but not much.
I had the catfish, corn and candied yams. The yams were great, the corn was good, and the catfish? It would have been impossible to cook that fish any better. Frequently catfish is overcooked and comes off dry - not this. It was very moist while also being completely cooked. The cornmeal breading on it comes off easier than I would have liked, but it tasted great to. The soul sauce with it I'm not sure was a good fit for catfish to be honest - perhaps a better fit for fries? It was still great though and the talents of the chef were in evident display. Given the challenge, I bet he could find something better than the soul sauce to go with the catfish.
Cornbread was included with the meal. That cornbread had everything necessary to be perfect but execution was lacking - the cornbread needed to be kept warmer before being served. The butter on it was an excellent match, but it needed a chance to melt and seep down into the bread. Had that been done, you would have been hard pressed to find better cornbread anywhere.
Normally I never buy desert as it's always overpriced and often overwhelms. This particular time I was out for a special occasion and decided to treat myself and my wife and I was curious as to what his cheesecake (sweet potato I believe) was like. The waitress told me they used to purchase the cheesecake but prices had gone up so far they felt they couldn't continue to buy it so they started making their own - somewhere some poor people got cheated out of a great experience because the prices didn't skyrocket sooner. I never tasted the former cheesecake, but there's no possible way it was better. I've had a lot of cheesecake including several from a big name restaurant that specializes in it - none of it comes close to this. It still feels overpriced like all desserts at $8 for a small slice, but it...
ย ย ย Read moreAfter seeing so many positive reviews, we took the fam to Sauce Boss Southern Kitchen, in Draper, tonight. YUM ๐ My boyfriend and my son got the lemonade to drink. It was super sweet but also tart at the end. It was a great combo, delicious. They brought us out pork rinds. The sauce to dip them in was so full of flavor. My youngest got the kids Mac& French fries, which comes with cornbread. He inhaled it. The fries were seasoned well, and crispy. The Mac is a shell pasta with a white creamy sauce and flavorful. My son also loved the cornbread which comes smothered in honey and butter. My other son got the chicken fried chicken meal, which also comes with 2 sides. He chose mashed potatoes and the Mac. It also came with cornbread. I had to remind him to use a knife and fork because he just started mowing down the food as quickly as he could. He said he only wished it had a bit more gravy, but he thoroughly enjoyed his dish. My boyfriend got the shrimp and grits, which was served with cornbread and he chose mashed potatoes. He lived in the south when he was younger and he has been craving some good grits for months. He was in heaven. I got the sticky chicken Po boy. It smelt so amazing, and it was. I got the shells and cheese for my side as well and it was delicious. I think they cook the pasta al dente, which isn't my preferred doneness, but regardless was delicious. The waitress was darling, and the gentleman who helped deliver the food (who I suspect may be the chef) was also kind. Based off the reviews, the building was not what I had expected. It's in a brick strip mall/business park-area, next to a family doctors office. But it was easy to locate and had ample parking. Our only regret was not saving room for their lemon berry bar, for dessert. But now we have something to look forward to for next time ๐ Overall, highly recommend. Our total was around $65 before tip, and we have 3 boxes full of leftovers. Great little...
ย ย ย Read moreAlways trying new places. Southern soul food? Let's try it! The place is small so the wait was kind of long. But it was a Saturday night at 5:45 so kind of expected. We waited about 30 minutes. The restaurant was very clean. Very impressed. Greeted promptly and professionally. The backside of the menu has the story of the history of the owner. A good read! We sat and got our drinks. My wife got the "Red Drink". She really liked it! I couldn't taste the "Kool-Aid" comparison the menu said but my wife could. I tasted more of a grapefruit flavor. But that could be because of what it's made of? We received a small basket of pork rinds with a special sauce to start the wait. The sauce we were told is BBQ sauce, black spices, and ranch dressing. I personally didn't care for it. Our food plates were very full and big! Three of us got the chicken fried chicken. I got the Mashed Potatoes and Gravy and Spiced Corn as my sides. Both were very delicious. My only complaint is I'm not a big fan of rosemary (my bad) and the chicken breading has a lot of rosemary. Otherwise, my meal was very good. One of our friends got the "Golden Splendor" which is fancy for Mac & Cheese and it was very good and the right amount of cheese sauce. My wife got the Pork Shank. Fall off the bone, no need for a knife meat. She got the Seasonal Vegetable (this day it was Red Beets) and Collard Greens. She said it was all very well done. Each plate comes with a tall pie slice of corn bread topped with honey butter. It was more cakey than you get with the homemade box corn bread and I liked it! We got both desserts. The Apple Bread Pudding and and Lemon Berry Bars. The bread pudding was a bit soggier than expected. Maybe because we got it to go and ate when when we got home (a 20 minute drive)? I personally found the berry bars very good. They were more of a cheesecake consistency and taste with a hint of lemon.
Would we come...
