I see Utah as a 'good food' desert. The majority of restaurants we have are boring chains that attract psycho addicted Mormon moms, 2/10 Rancheritos style Mexican food, and yet another burger place that serves burgers that you can't figure out how to eat because they're too big and bacon slathered. The gaps that are left are filled in with locally owned restaurants that do their best, and may or may not survive. Even fewer of those offer food that's something to write home about. Kompas Taqueria is something to write home about. FINALLY, a locally owned restaurant that provides unique and mouth watering food. Their corn tortillas are insanely soft, delicious; you've never had a corn tortilla like this, guaranteed. I ordered the OG Asada, 10/10 (think you know how good asada can be? I know, we're all mourning the loss of Hector's. This is really, really good); the Masala, 10/10 (great twist. Just because the flavor doesn't hit you in the face doesn't mean it's not worthy. Subtlety is valuable, too. Plus, those pomegranate seeds?? Those flavors meld quite well); the K-Poblano, 11/10 (JEEEEEEESUS, WHERE HAS THIS TACO BEEN MY WHOLE LIFE); and the MahiMahi taco, 10/10 (a classic. Very, very solid.). You might look at the prices and say, "These tacos are too expensive for a la carte. Need to introduce combos." Keep in mind these aren't street tacos. They're actual tacos. They have a lot in them. Inflation is CRAZY these days. Owning your own business has to be bonkers. Just spend the money and enjoy food that's finally breaking the mould of Utah's boring 'food scene'....if you could even...
Read moreTACOS!? Say less. As soon as my wife mentioned she saw this spot on social media, I was all in. Overall, it was a good experience—but with a few small tweaks, this place could easily claim the title of SLC’s Taco Spot. Let’s taco ‘bout it! (like what I did there!?!?)🌮
The vibe inside? Very cool. The graffiti-covered walls give it a hip, urban feel that works really well. It’s got personality without trying too hard. The ordering process was simple with digital menus behind the counter—although, hot tip: there's a big wall next to the register just begging for a menu display. Could be a visual game-changer!
Now for the main event: the food. We went all in—5 tacos (steak, al pastor, fish, tikka, and Korean), plus chips and salsa, and esquites. Everything was nicely plated, clearly labeled, and had good flavor across the board. That said, a little more punch in the seasoning could really level things up—especially for the tikka and fish tacos (maybe switch to fish strips & chicken strips instead of shredded?).
One note: while the tortillas seemed fresh (love that), they struggled to hold up to their contents. A few folded under pressure (literally), and we had to call in reinforcements: fork and fingers. Not a dealbreaker, but hey—the tortilla is the unsung hero. It’s gotta deliver!
Overall, I’d definitely recommend giving this place a try. It’s fun, flavorful, and feels like it's on the verge of greatness. Has Velvet Taco...
Read moreWas NOT on my radar. At all. Out’a left field, random Tues night, last min dinner with an amigo, and I’m walking into the unassuming Kompas. Sure, I played it safe and laid up ordering 2 carne asada & 1 carnitas taco. Who wouldn’t, right? New place, unproven, no word on the street, im there for the convo not the food kind night. My friend, almost rhetorically, states “ chips and guac, yeah.” So covered on the base fundamentals of fresh mex. Out the gate, hand made guac & chips make a big play for the spotlight. You start thinking “ damn. Why’d i order tacos? I could eat a meal of just these chips & guac”. The buzzer disk thing goes off and snaps focus back to tacos though. Walking back to the table hopes are high as you look at your tacos from as many angles as you feel ya can before people take notice. Now Ima say this, those tacos are different. Different in the best way. A way i cant put my finger on just yet which is tormenting my gray-matter. But im telling you that juice is worth the squeeze. Have yet to color outside the lines and try the fusion options like the sushi taco or Korean steak taco, but I expect nothing diff. A ridiculously good taco you...
