Gormandise is a highly recommended bakery in downtown SLC. My husband and I decided to try this new one in Draper for a Valentines Treat :) Oddly, as soon as we walked in I realized every woman that was with their spouse or partner was leaning away from them, kind of upset.. hmm đ€ Itâs very cute and well decorated in the front, the back windows are very cluttered but I assumed that was because theyâre still moving in. We were sat immediately tho they brought us to 2 dirty tables before spotting the one that was ready. All of the staff are new so, Iâm sure theyâre still getting into a rhythm. We ordered Italian soda, just one to share but we got two.. oh well, itâs probably been a heck of a night for this server. The flavoring wasnât stirred in which was fine but we couldnât stir it because the whip cream on top was stronger than our straws. I did my best and realized there was also milk or something in it floating at the top, it was the oddest Italian soda Iâve ever had and quite honestly I wish I couldâve made it work because I love Italian sodas đđ. Anyways, she came back and asked us about the water... I presume she saw my face about the sodas and didnât want to ask. The water was good. We ordered a meal to share and.. the carrots were supposed to be marinated in pomegranate jelly. They were, but it was rotten! I tasted sweet, then carrot, then what presumably was the rot but tasted like that smell of a leaky garbage bag đ€ą The fish was un seasoned so .. the dock was the most prominent flavor.. I immediately tried to wash down the carrots with some fresh pomegranate that was on the side as decor.. I got a mouth full of perfume! Those were bad too!? My husband determined to make the most of it, and eat his less than mediocre fish. The server then came to ask how the fish was.. I couldnât go much longer, I wanted to leave as soon as we got our soda. I had to say something but I do my best to be kind and understanding, as I worked in the food industry myself, years back. I told her it wasnât great, and that I think the carrots are bad and the Italian sodas taste like 2% milk (I actually said they taste a little watered down but.. Thatâs what they tasted like) Anyways, she told me it was an acquired taste and that Iâm supposed to taste sweet and not so sweet carrot and then I said that I tasted both those things, and then a pungent literal used garbage bag taste.. she whispered âpush that to the side, just whatever you donât likeâ. ...... dang girl! Not even going to humor me, okay then. We paid and left and I hope this service was from a very reasonable incident that happened to her or something. I think I know why the people in there were leaning away and a little upset now. We decided to skip giving dessert a chance even though that was the whole reason we came. đ happy valentines! My husband decided to cheer us up and go somewhere local and Indian to get the rest of our fill as we couldnât stomach most of that previous meal. Aromas was really good đđ» Itâs in the same parking lot, and though it doesnât have all the bright lights and things, I had a much more...
Read moreI've held off posting this review, but I can't anymore. I loved the original Gourmandise in downtown SLC, and maybe that location is still amazing. I don't know. This review is for the Draper location, which has been going downhill for years. Overpriced, mediocre food and garbage service.
The last time I met a friend here we could have saved ourselves $40 and just picked up premade sandwiches from a gas station. The sandwiches we got at Gourmandise were tasteless and dry, no condiments at all (not even mustard?), two wilted lettuce leaves; the "side" was like 2 oz, if that, of some kind of creamy salad.
Still, their bakery items are very good. My mom loves one of their cakes and has asked for it on her birthday for a few years. And every single time, they manage to screw up the order: order was lost; requested message was not added; requested message was completely wrong; cake had been dropped; last year, they gave me a cake meant for someone else (we had similar first names). Thankfully, I caught the error before I drove away.
This year I paid for two lines of script: my mom's nickname and a short birthday message with her age. I got the latter, but they didn't add the monicker. It was right on the receipt in black and white. I had to come back to have it fixed, and they just shrugged like, ooops.
The young lady at the drive-up window handed me the additional piece of chocolate (that's all they do - write with white chocolate on dark chocolate, hardly elaborate decorations) with bare hands (so gross - she was legit handling a credit card two minutes prior), and it was melting all over. And once again, I thought that pre-tipping is a joke and a scam. I tip generously every time, and I get crap service every time. What am I tipping for exactly? It's madness.
I had to throw away the additional chocolate piece because it was nasty and smeared. I get it, mistakes happen, but every single year for five plus years??? Not cool.
I'm going to try hard to talk my mom out of this cake next year. The drama...
Read moreI wasnât entirely sure what to expect of the food. I have always loved pastries, especially since visiting Paris, though this has made me a tough customer to please since experiencing said French patisseries. Much to my surprise, the pastries were beyond what I expected and did remind me of France (including macarons imported directly from France itself). In my party, we tried mousse cakes, crĂšme brĂ»lĂ©e, macarons, their seasonal brioche peach pastry (brioche rolls in the shape of a large peach with the bottom soaked in various peach syrups and additional wow factors), croissant, chocolate croissant, a brownie. Nothing was short of absolutely amazing with the only âdownsideâ being it left you wanting to try the entire menu of baked goods (which Iâm sure I will do). The food was also delicious. The pricing was more than fair for the portions and quality of food received. My whole party echoed this. I had the hand cut pasta in sage cream sauce and it was amazing. I added on chicken for a very reasonable price and felt the amount I received for the price was perfect, especially considering the quality of chicken. I only eat chicken, turkey, and white/mild fish, so Iâm kind of a snob when it comes to their quality and more often than not, Iâm disappointed with the quality of chicken used in restaurants. That was not the case here with quality or portion received for the price I paid. The service was just fine considering how busy it was. The atmosphere was okay, again, considering how busy it was. The bathroom I used, however, was a little subpar in relation to the rest of the experience. All in all though, I wish a location was closer to my house because I want to eat here all the time or at least grab a pastry or seven. đ€ŠđŒââïž My partner even said he would eat there again. Thatâs how you know itâs good. Loved it!...
