Shinkai Sushi is a very good place for sashimis and nigiris. I was not expecting much from this place, but it honestly blew my mind after trying it out. We came in on a Sunday lunch time right after they opened. We tried 4 dishes:
Shinkai Omakase Mentaiko Chicken Udon Chirashi Don Hotategai Crudo
The omakase (8 pieces of Nigiri’s) were done perfectly. The fish was fresh, tasteful, and sliced neatly. The sushi rice was just the right amount and was seasoned very well (more on the sweeter side, which is what I like). The seasoning and toppings on the nigiri’s were mild and blended very well with the fish and rice. Highly recommend this dish.
The Mentaiko Chicken Udon was just alright. The chicken itself was juicy and tender, but lacked a bit of flavor. The mentaiko on the udon was great, but can be very salty to some people. If you’re not a fan of mentaiko, then skip this one.
The Chirashi Don, much like the omakase dish, was perfectly done as well. The dish had enough rice and enough fish for the price. I would come back here just to order this again. Highly recommend.
The Hotategai Crudo was great, and I highly recommend this as well. The dish comes with a yuzu-ish jelly that blends very well with the sweetness of the scallops. The scallops were also torched, which added a smokey flavor and depth to the dish. If you like scallops, then you may like this dish.
Customer service is excellent. The waitresses were all smiles and frequently checked on us to see if the food was to our liking. They were nothing but helpful and friendly to us.
The only minor downside that I experienced was the wait time for the food. The food just took a little bit longer than I expected (around 15-20 minutes or so), but I did not mind the wait. I did notice that they had multiple to-go orders, so that could be a factor for the wait. Overall not a big deal.
If you’re craving for some good sashimis, nigiris, or even some rolls, I highly...
Read moreWith the five star reviews, my husband and I had to come check this out.
We came here to pick up food a couple weeks back. I asked the hostess what was in the spring veggie roll and she said carrot and cucumber and veggies so I said sure that sounds good. We ended up waiting almost an hour for our order, though, which was not ideal but they had just opened a couple weeks earlier and we understood that they were probably figuring out how much traffic they get, etc.
Anyway, when our order was finally ready, the hostess gives us the order and then tells me, oh the spring roll comes with just cucumber and avocado. I was so frustrated when she said this because it is so different from what she initially told me and the spring roll was a lot pricier than the avocado roll I ordered so I expected more in it. I didn't say anything to her, though, and I left.
When I got home and ate my food, I noticed that the spring roll had cucumber, avocado and seaweed salad on top. This was a little better but I don't love seaweed salad and I still felt cheated expecting one roll and getting something else.
Overall, though, despite not getting what I thought I ordered, what my husband and I got tasted good and it seemed fresh. I wish they had more veggie roll options because their options are a bit boring but the restaurant seems like a place with good quality food and it was pretty packed.
If you go, expect to wait a while for pickup and dine in orders as they seem busy with only 2 people to serve and host.
Overall, I may go again but I do think the host should check with the chef if they are unfamiliar with what the menu items have in them or perhaps the restaurant should list the ingredients of the spring roll, like ingredients are listed for all the other rolls...
Read moreFish quality is good and aged well for the price point. Salmon and salmon belly were buttery and rich and I highly recommend them. Each piece comes with long, thick neta as shown on the picture. It's very filling and generous amount of fish. But, at the same time, it might be difficult for some people to eat each piece at once and it's causing off-balance between shari and neta. Maybe mixing akazu and increasing shari portion to over 22 grams can help with balance.
Chirashi bowl was on point with some sashimi seasoned/topped with different sauces like yuzu and ponzu. High quality horseradish Wasabi and 'real' Japanese horseradish Wasabi are also noteworthy as it's rare in this price point.
Price is amazing for lunch deal, which is available on weekends as well.
Sake selection is a bit limited but did have both dry and frutiy/mellow ones at about 35% markup to MP, while other Japanese redtaurants usually charge 50%-75%. Personally, would be great if they can add more beer choices like Orion, Hitachino, or draft beers if possible.
Service was very attentive, consistently checking on water, taste, and orders. We came in a bit late close to last call, there was no pressure for bills as well.
Wood finished interior with moderate music is great for casual date or friends night. Clean restroom as well.
Overall, I think this is the best sushi spot ($30-$50) in...
