Two-Star Review: Flavor Famine at the Hotel Bistro
If you’re looking for a restaurant experience that’s more lukewarm than well-done, this might just be the place for you. Nestled inside a hotel, it seems they’ve taken the “limited service” concept to heart—because they had exactly one server trying to do it all: bartender, waitress, hostess, you name it. Props to her, though, for sprinting from table to table like she was training for the Olympics. It’s a pity the rest of the experience didn’t match her hustle.
Now, let’s talk about the food—or as I like to call it, “The Great Flavor Disappearance Act.” My wife’s sirloin steak was so under-seasoned it made plain boiled pasta look like a Michelin-starred dish. Salt and pepper must have taken the night off, and sadly, they didn’t leave a forwarding address.
As for my meal, the chicken tenders, fries, and coleslaw trio were playing a symphony of blandness. The fries could’ve used a good shake with the salt shaker, and the coleslaw—let’s just say it had a surprise jalapeño cameo, but even that fiery pepper couldn’t wake it up. It desperately needed a splash of vinegar and a dash of sugar to turn the snooze fest around.
To be fair, they did whip up a honey mustard sauce that was so good it almost made me forget about the rest of the meal. Almost. If only the rest of the menu had followed suit.
In conclusion, if you like your dining experience with a side of suspense (will there be enough staff? Will the food have flavor?), then go ahead and roll the dice here. Otherwise, you might be better off ordering room service. At least you know what you’re getting: blandness delivered straight...
Read morePassing through Dubuque on 619/22 and was searching for a quick bite to eat at a place we have not eaten before. This place came up and so glad that we found it. It's inside the Holiday Inn hotel.
Lots of parking in and around the hotel area. They have an outdoor patio area so based on the amazing whether we decided to sit outside. Menu has a lot of items to pick from however it's not overly crowded so every on the menu is high quality food. I ordered the club sandwich that was recommended by Amber our server. My wife ordered the grilled crispy chicken sandwich and the both of us had hand-cut french fries as a side that were fantastic.
Wife and I were saying that the food was amazing. I don't know if we were just really hungry but I know that we will stop back again to try the burger and the salmon that both looked really good on the menu and I would highly recommend anyone reading this ask for Amber as your server Who provided amazing customer service and was super friendly and helpful.
Overall five stars for service, friendliness, wait time, food portions and quality, convenience, and...
Read moreIts in the Holiday Inn so I stopped in for a beer and a quick bite to eat. I sat at the bar with a few other patrons who were all looking around for the bartender. About 5 minutes later he comes out of the kitchen and took our orders. He was nice enough but not very motivated to upsell me on any specials or cocktails. I ordered the walleye, fries and cole slaw. The slaw tasted like it had been fermenting like ground silage you'd feed a dairy cow. The walley, although flavored ok, was little soggy on the breading and it had more bones showing than a GQ magazine shoot. The fries were ok but soggier than a Cajun buttcrack. Overall, the meal was convenient and had...
