Beef Shack — Restaurant in Dundee Township

Used to be a lover of Zippys in Hoffman Estates back in the day, so when I heard this is very close to that recipe I had to make the trip to check it out.

It starts and stops right there. First off Zippys beef had a lot of flavor and spices added to it and was way less rubbery in texture compared to Beef Shack.

I think the only real similarity is they were both served on Garlic Bread and both had mozzarella on it. Also didn't care for the soft texture of the bun it was served on. While salt makes things taste better I would like to add that everything here was waaaay overly salty.

Maybe I came on a bad day or should visit one of the other locations for a different experience but Johnny's Beef in Elmwood Park and Arlington Heights is still the winner for me. You can't get it on garlic bread or with cheese there but the beef has the most amazing flavor and it's not overloaded with salt.

Pros and definitely cons. My wife and I really enjoyed the food. The cheesy beef and fresh cut fries were outstanding. This was our first visit ever as recommended by WGN radio. Our complaint isn’t food related, it’s managment and cleanliness. The tables aren’t cleaned after use, all 3-garbage cans were overflowing and even an employee eating lunch couldn’t push down the trash any further and simply walked away. When I told the worker that the drink dispenser was running out and spurting, the ketchup dispenser was empty and so was the napkins; his response was the pop probably tasted like sh.. and laughed. During all this, the entire staff stood around the prep table area and conversed personal topics. All said - no management. Great food but won’t last without...

Beef sandwiches are pretty good. You get a ton of fries and they have a fast drive thru. That's where the good ends unfortunately... We've tried them 8 times so far and gave them a little latitude due to the fact that they are new, close, and have a drive thru. We usually visit after 6pm, and the place is a ghost town. The fries always taste reheated. Even though there are alot of fries, they are soggy and soft. All 8 times we visited Beef Shack, 50% or more of our order is wrong. I'm not sure why. I repeated myself 4 times and confirmed at the window on our visit , tonight, but still they could not get my order right. This will be our last visit for a while. Hopefully they will get it...
