My wife and I love Umberto's. Excellent food!!! Great Italian family restaurant! I highly recommend! The reason I am not giving the place 5 stars is because of the service we received yesterday. We typically pickup from Umberto's but yesterday was our 10 year anniversary so we dined there because we typically love the atmosphere.
I wish Umberto's had an email address to send some of this instead of posting because they have a great restaurant that typically has great service but since they do not have an email maybe this will help other restaurants and servers to consider EVERY guest EVERYTIME.
Summary:
Management are friendly Italians, that provide a great authentic family restaurant experience. Food was good but would have been excellent (as usual) if served hot which was not the kitchen's fault. The waitress was pleasant, but spent her time flirting with staff rather than paying any attention to us.
Long story: 5+ mins to return with drinks. I can forgive.
30 mins to return with cool food that tasted like it had been sitting for 10 mins so not the fault of the kitchen rather the fault of the waitress. I can forgive.
But after dropping off food with my water already 1/4 glass our waitress never returned to refill or check how the food was (typically you check back after a couple bites). The neighboring table waiter returned 3 times plus the manager went to their table twice while we sat there with empty glasses. Upon seeing the other waiter the fourth time I finally grabbed the waiter's arm (not our waitress) and asked for water for our 2 empty glasses with our meal 80% gone. He returned with water, then our waitress showed up 3 mins (20+ mins after dropping off food) clearly only because the waiter told her we stopped him.
Then after finishing our meal we were ready to leave. After 5+ mins sitting there, I started to stare at the kitchen to get someone's attention to bring our check where I now saw our waitress flirting with the staff. Which really upset me because I can understand bad service when busy but lack of consideration to guests is less forgiving. I watched as one of the kitchen guys clearly told the waitress I was looking for her. She brought back the check and I proceeded to not tip her making a note "Bad Service!!!" and that I typically tip 20+% (as I was a server) but because she failed to pay any attention to us (and soured our anniversary) I didn't feel she deserved a tip. Pleasant girl just needs to mature.
To all servers put yourself in the guests' shoes if you had to eat cool food with no drink on a special anniversary (maybe with the guy you felt it necessary to flirt with rather than servicing your table) because of server neglect (a choice) rather than being overwhelmed (not the fault of a server).
In conclusion great restaurant with excellent food! We will continue to order from there. But note to servers/management you need to pay attention to ALL patrons not just large parties or fellow staffers because the lack of service by one staffer unfortunately soured our...
Read moreWORST RESTAURANT EVER!!!! First of all we called to order take out & you can barely hear the guy taking your order and he lied to us and said they didn’t have garlic knots & they were added to our order and we paid for them without even knowing! When I walked in the door, there was 2 people waiting for their order by the door and I walked literally up to the counter and wasn’t even greeted right away. The two men working behind the counter couldn’t even say a quick hello or I’ll be right with you. That was unprofessional and rude! I asked for an extra marinara and they totally freaked out on me and wouldn’t give me another one unless I paid for it. I just paid $70 for a pizza, calzone, garlic bread, and the surprise garlic knots. Usually pizza places will give you a marinara for each side. I got one! I walked out very disappointed. The food was not even that good either! The calzone was soggy on the bottom, and watery which is gross! The $30 Sicilian pizza barely had any cheese on it and when you take a bite, the cheese comes off with it! The bread was just ok. I do not suggest this place and will never be going back! Overpriced & rude staff! And I will add I never really leave reviews but this made me so mad I wanted others to know before trying and to...
Read moreI've lived in Tampa for the past 25 years and have been in the Dunedin area so many times since moving down from Long Island NY, but didn't know about this place until recently. The original Umberto's is in New Hyde Park, Long Island NY, which is 10 minutes from where I grew up. One of the brothers moved to Dunedin back in the early 70's and opened this restaurant. The current owners since 1986 told me that they use the same recipes for pizza and most other dishes. Anyway.... my wife and I go over that way frequently and often get pizza to bring back home. Need to heat up some slices at the house, but it's still some of the best pizza I've found in the Tampa Bay area since moving here. Excellent ratio of sauce and cheese with high quality ingredients. So many places say NY style pizza, but the owners are not even from the NY Tri-state area and probably have never even tasted real NY pizza. They usually put so much cheese that it's like chewing bubble gum until your jaw hurts. Real NY pizza is thiner and lighter on the sauce and cheese. You gotta be able to do "The Fold". Tried the Sicilian today and it was outstanding! I highly recommend this place. Be sure to check it out if you're in the area. You'll be...
