This is a five star review because East 48th deserves a 5 star review. However, my family has been a customer since the very beginning - when it opened decades ago. We love the family owned business and I grew up knowing it as “Charlie’s.” I will always speak highly of this restaurant. However, I remember when the “cranky man” started working there. Everyone in my family does unfortunately. I’m not sure his relation to the family. I grew up knowing the daughters of Charlie and they were my favorite when I was a little girl. I would go in with my grandfather, who was a friend dear of Charlie’s and the family. Most importantly, they are a core memory of my childhood and I hold it near and dear to my heart. This review is 5 stars for the establishment, but 1 (honestly zero) star for the cranky old man. He is so absolutely rude and ruins the family-orientedness of this incredible market. Tonight, my family ordered a couple of different things off the menu, one of which being an Eggplant Parmesan. We ordered from Charlie’s tonight because I’m in town for the first time in 6 months (I now live out of state for law school) and wanted a piece of “home.” I am a vegetarian, and to my disappointment, I was given chicken Parmesan instead of eggplant. I was completely okay going back because I love looking around the market. Unfortunately, when my mother called to explain the mistake, the cranky old man answered and was absolutely rude to my polite mother. My grandmother and grandfather were shocked to hear the response to this. Charlie is beloved and well respected in my family and how this man acted was nothing like what my family had hoped for. When I drove back and arrived at the restaurant, he asked for the chicken Parmesan. Unfortunately, cranky man, no, I did not bring the chicken parm with me because my mother already had bitten into it. He also made it seem like it was my fault for not reading the label on the container. Contrary to what he had probably hoped for, the container did say “eggplant parm” (as you will see in the photo). Not only is that rude to ask for, but would a restaurant really want partially eaten food back? I had brought a photo (attached below) to show him; however, he had no care for me - and I just wanted to leave with how rude he was. When I double checked that this new batch was eggplant, he was absolutely atrociously rude and made me feel dumb for clarifying. I decided to open the container because I would be so upset that the one meal I wanted while I was home, would be incorrect - yet again. The man next to me was checking out and he also double checked that his eggplant was correct. This seemed to tick off the “cranky man” more. I want East 48th to know that our family every Christmas, Easter, and other holiday order from you. Growing up every Monday and Friday was “Charlie’s” for dinner. I will never go in there and say “hey you’re being rude to Dr. O’Brien’s family” when I encounter this awful man. But, tonight I decided that I’ve had it with this guy - who does not respect a regular. Whoever he is, I TRULY hope he offers something to this business (that I - and others - clearly do not see) because he surely does not offer it to customers. Please know, I love Charlie and his entire family. Again, I will always recommend it to friends and anyone visiting Atlanta, but it is a shame if they happen to visit on a night that this man works. I love the establishment and I hope they deeply consider who helps promote their family business and who diminishes the...
Read moreI have been shopping here for years. The meatballs and chicken cutlets are delicious. However, I had enough of the take it or leave it attitude. They are very impatient and rude. They always have had that attitude and this incident just confirmed it. Just once when I made the trek to their store, I would like to enjoy my shopping experience.
Within the last week, the Covid masks requirement was relaxed by the CDC. Publix, Costco, trader Joe, and Whole Foods now allow customers to shop without their masks if vaccinated. Im a card carrying vaccinated adult. If asked, I would produce it on request. I respect businesses have the right to request patrons abide by their rules. It is their place of business. Basta. My husband and I wore our masks and never removed them.
The place was empty save for the owner and another worker. I pulled my mask away from my lips to reply to the owner's offer to get some cutlets for me. He was behind the deli case, 8 or so feet away. My voice is soft and am frequently asked to repeat myself. I pulled the mask away from my lips to reply and was promptly scolded to put my mask securely over my nose and mouth. He spoke to me as if I was a child, a disrespectful person, a rule breaker. It stunned me. I couldn't comprehend his point. My mask was clearly in place, not pulled doesn't to my chin, or half off the face.
He sounded bossy, as if was flexing his authority. I was 10 feet from the door and headed towards it to leave. Our $150 worth of meatballs, canned goods, wine, etc. unpaid in the counter and I just wanted out. I was too shocked and embarrassed.
My husband saw the scolding and came over to stand by me. He paid and we left. I felt humiliated.
I'm not a shrinking violet, but No one should be made to feel this way. There was no call for it.
Maybe he should relax, take his mask off in the back and let some oxygen reach his brain.
The next time I want some meatballs for my sauce, I will ask myself , do I...
Read moreI wish I could write a good review but after driving 40 minutes each way and spending 70 bucks on lunch and other items I won't go again. Maybe I have higher expectations than the southerners since I'm from NYC. I ordered a Prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich,I asked for roasted peppers otherwise it comes dry. The young girl behind the counter even repeated it back. I open the sandwich,no peppers but balsamic vinegar and a small piece of cheese, like one slice cut in half for both sides. Really? The bread was good but the sandwich was a child's size. No side,no olive oil or arugula just meat ,a slice of cheese and vinegar.Ive included half my sandwich I did not eat and another I had in NY to compare. I ordered a "fresh" mozzarella, mine was hard, dry and tasteless, the one pictured is from NY, lots of fresh milk and not dry and tasteless. I ordered prosciutto,$25 a lb. I requested cut thin as it's supposed to be,the old guy cut 3 thick slices. The chicken cutlets were dry and tasteless. Lastly the pastry, not Fresh. The St Joseph were awful, they were definitely not made today, the custard on the outside was dry and the actual shell fell apart when you picked it up it was so dry. I know it's not NYC but take some pride in what you serve and how you serve it. I guess it's awesome for southerners not knowledgeable on Italian foods but at least make a real sandwich The staff were all very friendly but places like this that have been around so long just stop caring about quality when people keep coming back unaware of how it's supposed to be. We all work hard for every penny today,I don't appreciate throwing my money away. I doubt they read this as there are know comments but if you do,do better please. The first one is 48th,the others are how sandwiches and mozzarella should look. I'd rather pay more though what I did get was not...
