Stepping into LA Mala, one is immediately enveloped by an atmosphere that feels both intimate and vibrant. The dim lighting, meticulously placed throughout the space, creates an ambiance that is undeniably inviting, setting the perfect tone for a refined yet relaxed dining experience. A live DJ curates a thoughtful playlist, seamlessly enhancing the mood without overpowering the conversation.
When it comes to the menu, LA Mala does not disappoint. The food, while approachable, demonstrates an attention to detail that speaks volumes. The guacamole, for instance, stands out not just for its taste but for its simplicity—a refreshing departure from the over-complicated versions seen elsewhere. Each bite is fresh, balanced, and indicative of a kitchen that understands restraint and quality.
The drinks deserve a special mention. Crafted with premium ingredients, they are as visually stunning as they are flavorful. Every cocktail is a showcase of balance and creativity, further elevating the dining experience.
Presentation across the board is impressive. Each dish is artfully constructed, with clear attention paid to detail. It’s evident that care is taken not only in the preparation of the food but also in the way it is presented, enhancing the overall dining journey.
In sum, LA Mala manages to strike a harmonious balance between ambiance, taste, and service. It’s a destination where guests can expect a well-rounded, memorable experience, making it a standout in a competitive...
Read moreIt's a dangerous game to have "La Mala" in your name and then show up with mediocre to "bad" everything.
The food is overpriced and underwhelming, and the service while attentive is also, oddly, punitive.
Had plans for a sweet post brunch lunch with a cutie who digs the ceviche. We both had one round of $15 cocktails, then, feeling loose, ordered another. I'd barely taken a sip before a fellow patron asked me a question distracting me from placing the drink down properly.
Naturally, it spilled a d while the staff was on cue to clean it up, no one made a move nor mention that another wasnt to be prepared. About 12 mins after the spill and cleanup, I asked the nearest bartender would they mind replacing the drink, I'd had wo little of it. He said, "we dont do that here". I asked whether the full and spilled drink was to end up on the check. He said, "yes." Restating that it is their policy not to replace spilled drinks before reluctantly making another, setting it before me then disappearing.
You're a bar/ restaurant open to three public, you dont replace spilled drinks?
I'm confused. But downtown Durham is a confusing place. La Mala is a confused restaurant. You don't punish paying customers. Unless they're being racist, phobic, weird. The shining reprieve was the Male bodied bartender with his hair in the bun. He seemed to understand how to steward a bar with careful service and suave compassion.
Sadly, I will not recommend this...
Read moreIt is a great place with excellent service, a nice atmosphere, a beautiful design and interior, and an impressive presentation of drinks. You can see how the bartenders carefully and skillfully prepare the drinks with attention to detail, from the glassware to the garnishes—each glass looks unique and beautifully presented. While we were there, a manager came over and offered to take a shot of tequila with us. Unfortunately, we declined, but it was a nice gesture. Overall, the staff created a very pleasant atmosphere with positive energy.
From food we've ordered Vallartaso Ceviche, Tacos De Pastor, & Carrito De Churros. My wife said the ceviche was delicious, and as for my tacos, I absolutely loved them. The meat was unique and flavorful, with a thin slice of pineapple on top, and the side sauce was also very tasty. The churros were presented in a really interesting way, served in a fun cart with three different dips.
From drinks, we've tried La Ultima Y Nos Vamos, El Chavo Del Ocho, Là Bichota, and my wife ordered a custom spicy drink.
All the cocktails were, first of all, incredibly delicious, and secondly, the proportion of mezcal, syrup, and flavors was perfect. There was no need to ask for an extra shot, which we usually do when we go to other cocktail bars or...
