Culinary Delight and Unmatched Hospitality at Saffron Indian Cafe, Durham NC

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Saffron Indian Cafe, and I am compelled to share my extraordinary experience, particularly with the biryani crafted by Chef Balkrishan. This culinary gem is an absolute must-try for any food enthusiast.

From the moment I walked in, I was warmly greeted by Chef Balkrishan and his associate - Roy, whose genuine hospitality and friendly demeanor set the tone for the evening. It’s rare to encounter a chef who not only excels in the kitchen but also truly cares about his customers' dining experience. Chef Balkrishan is a master of both.

The biryani itself was nothing short of perfection. The aroma was intoxicating, promising a burst of flavors. Each grain of rice was perfectly cooked, and the harmonious blend of spices was a testament to Chef Balkrishan’s expertise. The succulent pieces of ingredients and aromatic flavors, infused with the rich spices that make biryani such a beloved dish.

What truly set this experience apart was Chef Balkrishan’s personal touch. He took the time to explain the ingredients and the traditional techniques he employs, adding a layer of appreciation for the dish. His passion for his craft and his dedication to providing an exceptional dining experience were evident in every bite.

The ambiance of Saffron Indian Cafe complemented the meal perfectly. It’s a cozy, inviting space that makes you feel right at home, much like Chef Balkrishan’s warm hospitality.

In conclusion, Chef Balkrishan’s biryani at Saffron Indian Cafe is a culinary masterpiece that is elevated by his genuine care and friendliness. If you are looking for an unforgettable dining experience that combines exquisite food with heartfelt hospitality, look no further than Saffron Indian Cafe. Chef Balkrishan and his team will ensure you leave with a satisfied palate and a smile...

I was fortunate to stumble across this place, within walking distance of the hotel I am staying at in Durham. I love Indian food, and was delighted with what I got here. If you are looking for a sit-down restaurant with atmosphere, this "hole-in-the-wall" place with only a few tables is not the place for you. If you are looking for excellent Indian food, then based on the one meal I just finished I would recommend it. (You might want to consider carry-out, they seem to do a brisk carry-out business.). I started with the vegetable samosas, and they were good. The lamb vindaloo that I had as an entree was excellent. It was appropriately hot & spicy, the lamb was tender and well trimmed, cut into bite-sized cubes. The sauce, aside from being nicely spicy, was full of flavor. The naan and raita that I had also were perfectly fine, in particular I found the raita to be nicely tangy and cooling. I'm no connoisseur of Indian cuisines, but I have eaten at many Indian restaurants over the years, at many price levels and in many places. This lamb vindaloo compared favorably to any other one I've ever had. I should also note that the young lady who took my order and served me (I sat outside, it's a pleasant evening) was polite and helpful. All in all, very good food, great value for the money, and a very enjoyable...

In Durham for the summer and this was the first restaurant I tried. Been here at least a dozen times since the first time. Their food never disappoints! Their lamb vindaloo is my go to but I have also tried their briyani, tikka masala, chicken momos, chole, samosas and naan. Their portion sizes are huge and is enough for a second or even a third meal sometimes. They also give free rice with most of the dishes. Don’t get me started on the mango lassi! I sometimes stop by just for a lassi on my way home. Although I am not a vegetarian, they have a great selection of vegetarian dishes that are just as great. I really enjoy the chole masala as a great vegetarian option. And the people and service is great!! Especially Chef Balkrishan! He recognized me after the 2nd or 3rd time and is so friendly. He encouraged me try so many different items on their menu and I can say he definitely knows what he’s doing because everything was delicious. Wish I lived here for longer to keep...

We ordered Indian food back home in West Virginia this past weekend and was so excited to try it, but it was a huge let down. Saw this place after leaving Duke and wanted to give it another go and I’m so happy I did ! 🥹 Soon as you walk in the door, the smell of fresh herbs and spices just grab you ! The owners were exceptionally kind and not only did they walk us through the dishes and patiently waited for us to decide, they even threw in a free item! ❤️❤️❤️ They introduced us to Chef Rawat who is a renowned chef in India and the proof is definitely in his food ! 🥰🥰🥰 We tried chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, their roasted veggies (wasn’t too crazy about em though) garlic naan , vegetable samosas with tamarind (not pictured), and mango lassi ! 😮‍💨👌🔥😍I definitely did a happy dance my first bite ! 😂😂😂 Best food I’ve had in a very long time and can’t wait to go back !!
