Reminiscing my trip to Grand Rapids Michigan last week for the ongoing ArtPrize 2024, where I happened to be a recipient of warm and generous American hospitality. Exhausted by the pursuits of a hot and busy day, and after exploring some fabulous ArtPrize exhibits, I decided to retreat to a quieter part of the town that evening for a late dinner - Rose's Restaurant by the Reeds lake. I was greeted by Tim Field, my server for the evening in an unusually empty restaurant for a Saturday night. Perhaps, Tim was intrigued to see a lone diner at a late hour and after finding about my artistic pursuits, we were engrossed in a delightfully warm and intelligent cultural exchange of a conversation. For dinner, I was presented with a delicious bean and kale bowl, and any my tired self could not get enough of the generous portion of house-made root chips served to me. I had barely finished my dinner when the Rose’s Manager, Bill Koski greeted me. Bill was curious to see my artwork. Bill asked me what art school did I go to, and I hope he wasn’t disappointed to know that I never went to an art school, but that I was a doctorate in Biological Sciences. The two gentlemen were delightfully kind. I was sent off with a huge serving of the root chips and some delicious caramel popcorn for my long drive to Chicago the following day. Thank you, Bill and Tim, for a great conversation, an amazing dinner and a wonderful experience. Your hospitality was generously given and gracefully taken. I most welcome you to engage another adventurous traveler in a friendly, intellectual conversation and be fascinated by each other’s’ stories. The chicken salad was a revelation-so much more than your typical salad. Every bite had a new, tasty surprise: crunchy nuts, sweet dried fruit, crisp veggies, and a perfectly balanced dressing that tied it all together. It was fresh, creative, and absolutely delicious.
We also tried the crusted chicken, which was cooked to perfection. The crust was golden and crisp, giving way to juicy, flavorful chicken inside. Every element on the plate was thoughtfully prepared, making the dish memorable and satisfying.
And let’s talk about the tiramisu! It was the perfect ending to our meal-light, creamy, and just the right amount of sweetness. Each spoonful was pure bliss, and it’s clear the pastry chef knows what they’re doing.
On top of the fantastic food, the setting at Rose’s is unbeatable. Whether you’re sitting inside or out on the patio by Reeds Lake, the view is beautiful and the vibe is relaxed yet refined. The staff made us feel right at home, checking in just the right amount and always with a smile.
Rose’s is the kind of place you want to return to again and again. The food is creative and delicious, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the service is top-notch. Highly recommended for anyone in the East Grand...
Read moreThis was our first visit to Rose's. 4:30-5:30pm on a sunny afternoon in early March. It was a special dinner to celebrate our anniversary.
Margherita pizza is good and walleye is outstanding (I'm glad I got the second fillet because it was so tasty).
Triple chocolate mousse cake was fine but it would be much better if the mousse was richer & heavier like the Black Tie Mousse at Olive Garden. At $10 we probably won't order it again.
The porch is a not maintained very well; foam haphazardly stuffed in cracks the area around windows isn't real clean. Chairs out there are unusually short - a discomfort I notice immediately, especially since I'm taller than average Infrared heaters in the porch are sufficient but not as comfortable as might be expected in a fully-indoor environment; wear layers.
I'm an experienced restaurant server and so I definitely noticed Dave F to be an exceptional server. His easy grace, friendly and relaxed hospitality, bright smile, and attentive service were impressive - he could probably be a great service trainer (if he's not doing that already).
One improvement I would suggest is a sign at the entrance directing newbies (like us!) whether to seat ourselves or wait to be seated. Feeling confused and unsure is a bad start for a new guest.
Also, country music is a...
