Family Fare — Restaurant in East Petersburg

We truly loved family fare when we first moved to East Petersburg! We got take out at least once a week, we did take a break for a while but recently started getting takeout again to support local business; the last few times we’ve ordered takeout we have noticed a large decline in food quality. Additionally our whole family had some pretty bad gastrointestinal distress shortly after eating the takeout... one time it could have been something else, two times-eh? but we’re unfortunately 3/3. My eggs benedict were made with fried eggs, with a watery hollandaise that had no flavor- I suspect instant “just add water” and the ham was so dry and oddly colored that I couldn’t cut through it. The bagels from the breakfast sandwiches were burned and the cheese was like rubber- a far cry from what we used to get there! with all of that said, please don’t write this place off; I know many small businesses are struggling to stay afloat amongst the pandemic, and perhaps cutting corners is one method of keeping the doors open. We’re not done here but we are for a while. I’ll change my review post-pandemic and hopefully FamilyFare will go back to the little local diner...

My son and I gave this place the benefit of the doubt despite the bad reviews. When it comes to mom and pop's breakfast diners in PA, we ARE easy to please. It's cheap and the service is what you'd expect from a locals-only-type diner. However, the food here was of surprisingly low quality. It has to do with the preparation. When you taste something there from their grill, such as their pancakes, it's obvious that they do not properly clean the grill between items, if at all. So, for example, if there is char left on the grill from whatever was cooked before your order, that's exactly what your eggs will taste like....or your pancakes, etc. Smokey-burnt and just god-awful. I hesitate to leave poor reviews for any place that's truly trying, but this is one place where the cook is just phoning it in, basically. I was present when mr.john Batista was complaint about his food ....let me tell you the truth . Mr Batista was rude,loud, and just looking like a fool ...his food looked fine to me. I have ordered eggs Benedict for years at this establishment and they where fine ...he has no idea how this dish is served ..for him being a restaurant is we as he claimed ..i don't think so...i have nothing but good to say about family fare ..the food is always fresh, and good. I feel Mr Batista was looking for a free meal.. He made himself look like a total...
