Stopped in with a large group Friday ( Labor Day Weekend ). Promptly seated. We had a very nice young man for our waiter. (He's 5 star all day ).
G's is a spot where we go twice during our labor day Tawas trips. It always seems to be the place we start at and end at.
So. When you enter. It was busy tonight. People waiting. Tables full. Big TV's placing Tiger and MSU. Nice. Good vibes so to speak.
Put in our drink orders. Waited. Put in our appetizer orders. Waited. Put in our dinner orders. Waited. Now. Depending on the POS ( point of sale ) system they use. This is where it all went down hill. First appetizer came out to one part of the table. Dinner to another. Then salads to another. Then appetizer to another. Dinner somewhere else. And so on the whole time. Half the table was done before others even got a salad. Very dishoveled to say the least. part of our party ate cold food to wait for the second part to get food.
Food: Salads were very good. Bowls full. Good amounts of stuff. Here's a HUGE drawback. You put a small cup of dressing in a large bowl of salad for multiple people to split. And without telling anyone. Charge $ 1.50 for an extra small cup of dressing. Now what pissed me off. . My wife was closest to where the server came by. So everyone would ask her to ask for more dressings for there salads. I GOT $ 9.00 ADDED TO MY BILL FOR DRESSINGS !!!
That will not happen again !
When the pizzas came out. I can honestly agree with another reviewer that they are just alright. Crust is in fact better then the pizza as a whole. Again. Nickels and Dimes. $15.50 for a 14" pizza. But extra for every single topping. If you do half one way and half the other. Guess what. You have double the toppings charges ( that made a just alright pizza a premium pizza charge ). That's another nice multiple lines of charge on your bill. You see where this is going. .
The dinner ends and one thing that is very fast is the bar tender waiting by the table to collect the checks. . . Fastest portion of service we received all night. . . Some comment was made that rubbed a portion of our party the wrong way, but since I didn't hear it, I cannot comment.
My bill has a nice $ 2.09 CC processing fee. Oh wait. Another misc fee on top of all the other lines of charges. That's a big NO to me.
My bill was $ 75.80 for two 14" pizzas, one order of garlic spears and four drinks. And yes. A ton of extra lines of dressings and toppings charges. One of our pizzas was a chicken pesto pizza. 14". $25.50. NOT WORTH IT. The experience in it's self left a bad taste in ALL our mouths no pun intended. And I am VERY sure this trip will NOT end in a trip to G's. And VERY possible not start there next time. I'm a tad bitter. There are other spots we are learning about and exploring because of experiences like this.
G's you got me this time. But that's probably the last time....
Read moreTalk about your family vacation restaurant, this place is just about perfect. (oh, I know there is more than one location, but this review is for the Tawas, MI location).
Located just a short walk from lake Huron, the location is almost perfect. It's right at the end of a busy shopping area of a nice little tourist town. There is a park across the street which is part of the warf, so if you sit outside you have people watching, car watching (lots of people with nice cars like to cruise the strip so there's usually good cars to see going by), and you can still get just a touch of nice lake breeze if it's blowing the right direction. The inside seating is nice too with a family area and a bar area.
The food is seriously good, and though I've sometimes strayed to try other items, my favorite item is their pizza pocket. They can make almost any pizza pocket for you or they have a nice selection of prebuilt toppings. The dough is thin most of the time, and always always tasty. It comes with butter brushed over the top, but you can ask to have that 86ed.. My son loves their whole wheat pizza too. If you're looking for a burger, they do have one or two that are OK, but I wouldn't classify this as a burger joint. They do service alcohol.
One silly little fun thing is they have a pull-tab lottery dispenser that you can spend some money on. We always blow $10-20 on it and just give our winnings to the staff as a tip. I believe they have keno as well, so it's a little vestige of the past.
The service is always just a tad on the slow side, but really I don't mind. I just think of it as "lake-time" which always flows slower than home- or work-time. But I've never had a bad or unfriendly server and the food is worth the wait.
If you're in the area and want a sit down meal that's pizza pockets plus standard American fare, I highly recommend stopping in and enjoying the food and the rest of the...
Read moreIf this was my first G's visit, it would have been my last. I've been to every G's Pizzeria in Michigan and have never been dissatisfied until yesterday. I ordered garlic Spears and it came out looking like a pretzel. I asked the waitress about it and she said that's how the Speers are made. I've eaten hundreds of individual Spears at different G's, and they have never looked like this. They're normally all buttery and have parmesan cheese sprinkled on them. This was a debacle.
The biggest disappointment of all was the deep dish pizza. I've never ordered a deep dish pizza from G's before and always love the regular pizza. I tried it. It was the worst pizza I've ever had in my life and that says a lot!
It appears that their deep dish pizza is not a deep dish pizza at all. I believe they take pizza dough, make it into rounds, cook them and then save them for later. When somebody orders a deep dish pizza they pull out this spongy piece of bread and then lather on some sauce and the toppings that you order.
We all know what a deep dish pizza is, but this isn't it! It was awful. To the waitresses credit, she did offer to bring me something else, but if you wait that long for pizza and then you have to wait that long again, it just wasn't worth it. When I questioned her on how the pizza was made she said she didn't know but she went talk to manager and they took 10% off my bill. I scraped the toppings off and ate those but the sponge part of it - I gave back to them in case maybe they needed to mop the floors. I'll go back to the G's in West Branch, or on the west side of the state, or in Houghton Lake, but I doubt that I'll ever stop in Tawas again for G's Pizza. That was terrible!
If I can figure out how to post a picture I certainly will. You will not recognize...
