The Ice cream was phenomenal! My son and I both walked away with shakes, and when I say they were amazing, it is no exaggeration!
The atmosphere was really interesting as well! Imagine taking a time machine back to the days of ice cream parlors, wooden floors, jukeboxes, and Friday nights at a drive-in!
I definitely recommend this place! The quality is fantastic, reasonable pricing, and the taste... Chef's kiss.
However.....
I recommend you order and take it to go... The shakes were really great! The old-timey atmosphere was enveloping and enticing. But also astonishingly awkward. There was no music, no real laughter from the patrons, just awkward silence and the hum of the window unit AC. Old-timey, yes. But in the way you watch an old western and when the stranger walks through the door it goes silent as everybody eyes them up and down.. the servers were quite polite and cordial, but not very personable I didn't really know what to do when I walked in. It felt like I should speak as if in a library. I was given a menu, then shortly later a waitress takes the order and fills it. But no pleasantries, just quick direct actions. I think there was a "have a great day" at the end. So it wasn't all lost.
Maybe I came on an off day. Or something caused the sleepy scene. Sometimes things happen, an that's life. I'll definitely try this place again as the shakes are worth it. But, not for the fun, lively atmosphere. I'll try to update this review, once I give it a...
Read moreTo the guy who gave a 1 star rating, this shop is in the old style. 1920s. Ice cream. Parlor.
Not 5 star chicago restaurant. You sit down and they come and take your order. You can go up to the counter and pay right away. You dont have to wait for a bill, but they'll bring one out for you. If your ice cream was wrong, they'll make you a new one, no problem. Maybe theyd even let you keep the wrong order if you wanted it.
Ive gone to this place several times. Its museum owned, staffed by teenagers. The atmosphere is wonderful, lots of old stuff, including a working vinyl jukebox from the 1950s, and the place gives people a chance to experience the way things were done in the past.
Hand made phosphate sodas, which are also used in their ice cream sodas and floats, great shakes, malts, and "cows," and their sundaes are awesome.
Sure. It aint a fancy restaurant. But thats not why you go there. You go there for the atmosphere, the hand crafted sodas and ice cream, and to be transported back to simpler times where people were actually decent folk.
Its about 30 minutes away. Theres culvers and other small ice cream shops that are closer. But I still like going to Laubers over any of those when I...
Read moreAs a Laubers employee, I could say that I love my job. I love my coworkers, and my boss is great! The ice cream is always pretty good, and I don't have many other complaints. Definitely recommend the root beer float, Black and White, Timberlee, Dusty Road, etc... If you haven't tried a phosphate, try them one of these times! I especially love the Green River or Cocacola! And all the old things that are on the shelves certainly take you back! We may not be your 5-star fancy restaurant, but it's worth the experience!
Usually, when it's busy and I have to try to get to other tables, it can be hard. I understand that it's a small place due to the building being old, though. (it was built originally in 1919), so we are sorry for any inconveniences that are caused and that we're only a small team of people.
I would say that this place is for you if you like ice cream and you want to be taken back to the past!
Fun Fact- Laubers has been officially open for 50 years!
(Laubers...
