FREE PUDDING!! Breakfast Tuesday morning. Randy's Family Restaurant in Eau Clair WI.
Value 3.75 stars Service 4.5 stars (I almost never give perfect scores) Taste 3.75
Even at Noon it was a bit busy. After a small wait to be seated, we got a table and our server Laura was at our side. She asked if we would like complimentary warm pudding. We were confused but happily accepted. Laura brought out 4 plastic (3 oz cup?) Of vanilla pudding.. We all would give it 4 out of 5 stars. It was not an instant pudding. It was a cooked warm vanilla pudding. I can honestly say I never been offered free pudding.
When Laura asked what we would like to drink she also suggested we start with a breakfast appitizer. I never heard of a breakfast appitizer, but who can pass up a freshly made pecan carmel cinnamon roll. We split the roll into 4 pieces. Tony said it the cinnamon roll was ok. Amy thought it was a bit dry. Amy and I thought the roll itself was great, but need more carmel goo on the pecans and roll. Alex is not a fan of pecans but said it was still pretty good. 3.75 out of 5.
For breakfast, Amy ordered french toast, eggs, bacon with a side of biscuits and gravy to share. Her choice was cinnamon French toast or Texas French toast. She likes the thicker bread but also likes the cinnamon. So I suggested the Texas toast and have them sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on it. It worked ok but Amy said she would rather it be baked into it because it gave it a gritty texture. The gravy on the biscuits needed more pepper or a spicier sausage. I agreed and I don't like spicy food at all. 3.5 out of 5 for Amy overall
Alex ordered a sausage egg muffin, bacon, and cheese hashbrowns. The sausage muffin was really good. The hashbrowns were good but the cheese was melted so much that they weren't super cheesy. The bacon was slightly overcooked. Alex gives his food 4 out of 5 stars.
Tony and I ordered "The Hungry Man". 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage and 2 pancakes. Tony opted for chocolate chip cakes. He liked the eggs and Hashbrowns. The links could have been crispier. He said the pancakes were very firm. Not soft at all. 3.5 out of 5.
I was happy to get blueberries baked inside the cakes. The bacon was too crispy. The hashbrowns, like the gravy, needed salt and pepper. I give it 3.5 out of 5.
Our server was outstanding. Amy commented that she never had a server do such a good job and upsell so effortlessly.
The total bill was $73 and we...
Read moreBusy Friday night about an hour before close. Pleasant greetings and quick seating! Our server came over quickly and was very friendly and cheerful. We ordered cheese curds to start. They were tasty, with a very light batter coating. We each had dinner salads. Fresh and crispy. Unfortunately we chose the “homemade house French” for a dressing, which came on the side. The flavor/texture combination just did not appeal to us. We could easily have asked for an alternative, but Wife used the Ranch left over from the curds, and I just made do with the French. So, not a criticism, just advice to taste the dressing and make a change if needed.
Wife had the fried fish and shrimp. Her read was that the shrimp were good, fried fish was okay, seemed like pre-packaged, and fries were slightly undercooked. I had the chicken gizzards. Some of the best I’ve ever eaten. Surprisingly tender. Fish was okay but nothing to rave about. Here’s my gripe… I specifically asked the server if the baked potato was fresh and fluffy, because I hate soggy potatoes that have been sitting, wrapped in foil in a steamer. She assured me it was “baked fresh.” Not the case at all. Dense and soggy. Sure, I could have sent it back and gotten mashed or something, but it was already late, we were road weary and I just made do. We got Triple Chocolate Cake and Carrot Cake to take back to the room for a snack. Both were excellent!
Our server was very nice and attentive and I would have loved to give her props, but I didn’t hear her introduce herself, she didn’t have a name tag and her name wasn’t on the...
Read moreI've lived in Eau Claire for just over six years, and I've passed Randy's on my way to school and work for about every day in that time. And every time that I did, I'd say to myself, " I really need to stop by one of these days."
Well, today was that day, and I regret not having stopped by sooner! It was pretty busy for a Wednesday morning, but I got served right away. I'd taken the time to go over the menu on their website (which is a really good website, by the way!) so I was ready to order pretty much as soon as I sat down.
The food came out pretty quickly, and it took me back to when places like this were everywhere on the highways, back when summer road trips were financially feasible. Two whole plates stacked with food, and good food at that! I went in hungry, but I filled up after the first maybe quarter of my pancakes and an egg. I can't remember the last time I got full that quickly on anything, and I'm looking forward to having the leftovers for...
