We stumbled upon this gem by accident. We were in the area and needed to kill time before picking up daughter at the airport. We were supposed to meet up with some local friends for drinks at another restaurant but all they had were fancy apps and gourmet burgers with seating outside and I really wasn't up to it. So we figured we would drive around to see what we would stumble upon. The plan was to go down nolana and pick something from there but I somehow missed it and ended up on Trenton. So we took a right on Trenton off of 2nd Street and made it to this plaza with several eateries in the area. After careful consideration we chose this location. Turned out to be a very nice establishment, very clean with good service. It was very chill but lively at the same time. We started off with chips and salsa that was brought by our server then proceeded with an appetizer of doble alitas a la Parilla con salsa verde. We weren't sure what we were getting but took a chance. They were absolutely delicious and the green salsa complimented them very well. We then moved on to the main course which was a parillada for two. That was beef & chicken fajita, beef mollejas, sausage peppers and onions. It came with flour tortillas rice and beans. It was absolutely delicious. The only special request made was well done extra crispy for the mollejas. The order for two was very very well served hot and fresh. We we enjoyed our visit and the service. If we are in the area again we will...
Read moreWent to Senor Cactus for dinner after church with a good friend. The restaurant is located on Trenton just west of the expressway. The restaurant has a laid back atmosphere and not your typical Tex-Mex decor. The menu carries a good selection of fare with enough variety to choose from. There are steak and seafood entrees to include seafood cocktails. Chips and salsa are served once seated, I enjoyed the freshness of both. We started with choriqueso, melted cheese with chorizo, served with tortillas. I kid you not, the cheese stretches A foot long when you scoop it out. We cleaned the skillet it came in. We both ordered the same meals because my friend really likes the enchiladas there. We ordered the mole enchiladas, these come filled with chicken, smothered in a rich tasting sauce, and covered with queso fresco. Rice, beans, and salad come on the side. The rice was cooked perfectly and the beans were some of the best I've had. Alot of restaurants fail at these two basic items, so it was nice to go to a place that nailed it. Lastly we had the bread pudding for dessert that comes topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The dessert was a bit thin compared to most bread pudding but everything about screamed delicious and was really good. Since the beans were so good I can't wait to go back and try...
Read moreIt's a nice little restaurant in a strip mall between two Hilton hotels.
I was in town for business and staying at the Hilton Suites.
Señor Cactus was the closest restaurant, just across the parking lot, so I gave it a try.
I was really impressed. The first night I had the Relleno, which was a nice Poblano stuffed with cheese and ground beef. It had a good texture not too crispy and not too soft, with a good flavor. The refritos were very nice and creamy.
The second visit I had the Caldo Tlalpeño. It was very good. The chicken was flavorful and breaking up the chipotle pepper gave the stock a nice kick.
Both nights I had the Mango Margarita, which is a delicious and exceedingly dangerous cocktail, as you can't taste the alcohol content at all.
The food wasn't as spicy as I anticipated, but that might be the style for the Rio Grande Valley, as other taquerias I visited were more about flavor rather than heat.
Service on both visits was fine. The staff was friendly and helpful, I never felt neglected, nor rushed.
I recommend Señor Cactus as worthy of a meal, and if I am ever in the valley again I...
