This place was amazing. I was a little bit wary coming here due to it being just in a strip mall area in a suburb where I have had a fair amount of mediocre food. However I decided to try it out because my partner and I were spending the day in Edwardsville and I was really in the mood for Thai food.
I enjoyed the atmosphere, it had enough hole-in-the-wall feel to be charming, but was well maintained, clean, and nicely decorated. The music was, I assume, Thai, and it was epic sounding. I felt like I was about to go into battle or something. That may have been one of my favorite parts.
The menu was great. It had the Americanized noodle bowls and crab Rangoon that I expected, and it also had a wide array of authentic Thai dishes to my pleasure. Unfortunately they were out of the Zapp Dumpling and Salmon, which I was excited to try (and I'm sure I will next time), but we got the chicken dumplings, red curry with shrimp, and the pad talay Thai (like a panang curry with mixed seafood). The seafood was great, with the mussels probably bring the latest I've ever seen, and the airport being jumbo as well. The calamari had definitely been frozen, but was still quite good. The curry sauces were phenomenal, probably the best I've had.
Are server was great, too. It was a Thursday, and it seemed like she handled the entire front of house by herself, seating, taking carry outs, serving, bussing etc. You could tell she was very efficient, because she stayed on to of all of that while providing us with excellent service and keeping my Jasmine tea full. She was also extremely kind and helpful.
Anyway, I'm still elated over my experience at Zapp Thai, so everyone should go there. I'm excited to go back and try the Angel...
Read moreUpdate: my 5-star review is no longer 5 star. After returning post plandemic I found the food to be the worst imitation Thai food I've ever had. I had Pad Thai and they added $2 for chicken which should be the basic and with so many ingredients missing. No ground dried shrimp several other things missing. Tom Kha arrived watery coconut creme with green onion and hot oil. When I asked why there was no actual kha root, no lemon grass, no lime leaf, he said they were cooked in there but they removed them. I don't believe that because I didn't taste any. Very little taste in a soup I have enjoyed and made at home for 40 years. Even the iced tea was flavorless brown water. I won't return again. It went from a favorite restaurant to a "never again"!! $34 horribly wasted. Took home the remainder to see if I can rehab it with the missing ingredients.
Original 5 star review: Excellent Pad basil herb w/ chicken and Pad Eggplant. Small Chinese eggplant not big European eggplant. Excellent Tom kha gai soup as well. Friendly staff...

Stopped into Zapp Thai for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by both the value and taste. I ordered the Pad See Ew with tofu, opting for spice level 1—and it was absolutely outstanding. Just a hint of spice, perfectly balanced with deep, savory flavor. The noodles were cooked just right, and the tofu was well-marinated and satisfying.
The lunch special is a great deal at just $10. It came with two crispy cream cheese wontons and a small cup of soup, making it a complete and filling meal without breaking the bank.
The service was friendly and attentive, and everything came out quickly. Whether you're vegetarian, love Thai noodles, or just want a great local lunch spot, Zapp Thai is a must-try.
