Read moreThis place was recommended to me by my Mom's significant other, as he used to be a frequent patron when he worked in the area. It sits on a corner, and is very visible due to the bright green paint, and shouldn't be confused with a similarity named place one block to the West. Parking is an absolute pain, most of it is on side streets, so you may have to walk across Alameda, but when I was there the traffic wasn't too busy, so it wasn't difficult. There was a bit of a line to get in, but I don't expect anything less during Sunday brunch. If there wasn't a line I'd be worried.
The inside is a bit eclectic in decoration, let's call it Mexican Diner Chic, just weird odds and ends with no cohesive theme. It isn't bad per se, just a bit disconnected. It's all booths for seating as near as I can tell, and I really hate booths as they are very uncomfortable for me. That in and of itself is most of the 2-star drop for atmosphere. While everything is worn and well used, it's very clean.
The service was impeccable, and I had to work real hard to see the bottom of my coffee cup. My order of Huevos Divorciados, came out quickly, was hot and the eggs cooked to perfection. They understand what salt is here and so I only had to add a little to my eggs. With both Chile Verde and Chile Colorado both on the plate I figured it would be interesting, and I wasn't disappointed. The meat was tender and loaded with flavor, with just the right amount of picoso to make it interesting, without being overly spicy.
Overall, it was excellent. Sometimes these little out of the way places often have the best food, despite not looking like much. Honestly, I probably wouldn't have tried it without the recommendation, I think I need to be a bit more adventurous when I'm out looking for a new...
Read moreI ended up here because i originally intended to try the Good Luck Cafe, but a single handwritten sign on the window said closed for holiday vacation until 7/27. So 2 spaces back on a corner, was the Lucky Cafe. Being 6:15am, it was open and i was in luck. Come to find out from a regular patron, the Good Luck Cafe originally started out here where Lucky's is, until it's was sold and the new owners needed a bigger establishment. I guess the food is so good. I can't wait to try it next month. I asked the waitress if i could get a Mexican Plate this early. Absolutely! Anything on the menu can be served up at anytime. The coffee was really tasty and fresh. Served up with a big bowl of creamer(thank you so much), the waitress keeps your cup always filled to the brim. I missed this. I love service like this. Can't remember when the last time was i had plenty of creamer and NEVER had to ask for a refill. My plate was served up quickly as i conversed with a really nice local named Ramon. He was a really nice gentleman who told me local stories and gave me the background on Lucky's Cafe. The cook is visible right behind a counter bar(another thing i miss). It kind of reminded me of the Iconic H&H Car Wash (RIP). The Mexican plate comes with a red cheese enchilada, a chile relleno, a beef deshebrada taco, rice and beans. The plate was delicious served up with a medium heat green salsa and flour tortillas. I ordered a menudo to go, but it was not one of my favorites unfortunately. Just my opinion, but i enjoy a much more red Chile broth. Good thing about this place are it's hours. I love being able to find a restaurant(not fast food) open at 6am You'll really enjoy the extensive selection on the menu, the prices are fair, and the...
