Don Taco & Mexican Food — Restaurant in Elgin

I think I found my Elgin place! This is my second time here. Already 4+ years out of Chicago and I finally found Mexican authentic food that taste delicious as most in Chicago area. I got the birria tacos w/consume twice. It is super delicious, the torta w/ham & eggs is my sons' go-to (make sure to remove hot peppers if u can't handle the heat). For my second visit, my family and I did a try-out with a bunch of different food. Besides the birria tacos and torta, we ordered the banana leaf pork tamales, steak tacos, 1lbs of carnitas w/homemade tortillas, and menudo. We also ordered a coffee and a Limon w/chia drink. Coffee was the instant coffee and had a hint of cinnamon which was a bit surprising but wasn't bad. The Limon w/chia was great. I'm usually not a huge fan of menudo and more for pazole (which yet to try on Thursdays) but the menudo was actually pretty good. My husband had the whole bowl. The carnitas was delicious, it's like the regular if it's made correctly. I ended up taking the banana leaf tamale home because we just ordered too much. Let me tell you, IT WAS DELICIOUS! So flavorful and the heat was perfect and will need to try the chicken ones. We also tried ice cream on my first visit. The greenish one with colored swirls named something in Spanish+Tuffrutti (might've misspelled) was great. At first, I was like it tasted like cake but as I was eating.. I really didn't get that dough texture and realized it wasn't cake, it was actually buttercream? Weirdly, I know very fattening yet kinda unstoppable.The people there are all so very nice and have great customer service: very friendly and seem to be happy while working and not just collecting a paycheck. There's an extra fee if you use cards to pay so bring cash if you want to save. Prices are decent (hopefully, doesn't go up because it's a definite I'll keep coming if the price is right) Overall, definitely coming back and trying more food. To start off they had a holiday ham or leg going on which I ordered for my company party 1 week ahead of time and they said it would be ready the next week at 1pm. I called the following week in the morning just to confirm my pick for the day (good thing I did too), and they had forgotten about my order and they said it would be ready at 230pm (kind of late for lunch if you as me) I show up at 230 to pick up my order and they told me it would still be another 10 minutes, I spoke with the manager and expressed my frustration with the ham and she went on to have an attitude with me, at which point she wanted to cancel my order. After the 10 minutes, the manager comes out and says that the ham I ordered isn't ready, but she has another ham ready if I would like. The difference in the ham is that I ordered a spicy ham and the one she had ready wasn't spicy. Would definitely not recommend this place due to their lack of communication and the managers attitude.

P.S. at no point in time did they mentioned that the oven broke down and as a company owner I would have called the customer and informed them about the situation...

Bought 7 tamales and there was hair in two of them. Will never step foot in here again. It was actually red hair and the lady who served me had red hair. Absolutely positively disgusting! I will be disputing my card since I had to throw everything away! In response to the owner. Yes there is a lady who has black and red hair (black in the front, red at the tips) I just dealt with her TODAY. I conversed with her for over 5 min. Nobody is gonna drive 45 min away from their home to try to get free food (especially when I eat out 5-6 days a week) I don’t need your free food nor would I eat it again if you gave it to me on a silver platter. I have been eating Tamales my whole life and have NEVER came across something red and black that is identical to human hair! Yes, I understand the tusk can sometimes be in there but that was definitely 100% a black and red hair!!! Just wear hairnets and you won’t have this issue again. Still disgusted and still had to go spend $20 on food so no I don’t...
