We recently had the pleasure of dining at SUMO in Columbia, SC, and it was an absolute delight. Even though it was lunchtime, we couldn't resist trying the dinner portion of the NY Steak and Chicken Meal at SUMO. This generous meal came with a satisfying combination of flavors and delightful accompaniments. We enjoyed a comforting bowl of soup that warmed our taste buds and prepared us for the feast ahead. The salad was fresh and crisp, complementing the main course perfectly. The meal's highlight was undoubtedly the NY Steak and Chicken—the steak cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, with a mouthwatering char on the outside. The chicken was equally delicious, tender, and flavorful. Both proteins were expertly seasoned and left us craving more. The portion sizes were more than generous, providing us with a satisfying and filling meal. Despite being already satiated, we couldn't resist indulging in the small ice cream served at the end. It was the perfect sweet ending to our delightful dining experience. Overall, the NY Steak and Chicken Meal at SUMO exceeded our expectations. The combination of flavors, generous portions, and thoughtful details, such as the soup, salad, and dessert, made it a truly memorable dining experience. Whether you visit for lunch or dinner, this meal is a must-try for those looking to savor a delectable and satisfying feast.

3 stars only because our main course and the chef were good! You can definitely tell that there has been a change in ownership. The atmosphere did not feel like the traditional Japanese Hibachi Steak House or “SUMOS”. No more sushi? They took all of the pictures off the walls. A big part of me patronizing Sumos was the joy of seeing my family photos that were taken over the years. The drinks from the bar were a NO. I had the Malibu Bay Breeze, I could’ve made it at home. Minute Maid Fruit Punch, a little Malibu and an orange slice. For an appetizer I ordered “shrimp tempura” and Japanese Pork Gyozas :(. Highly disappointed. The gyoza were fried too hard, and they were cold. The shrimp tempura were not battered correctly. I sent them back and requested a remake. However, our waitress came out stating “The cook indicated that our fryers aren’t working right. So, we’re unable to do a remake!” Honestly, our waitress knew that the quality was not right when she brought the plates out. LOL, I was truly disgusted. Main course was Filet mignon, chicken & shrimp. It was pretty good. No complaints.

Won't return here again. Spent nearly 60$ on take out for two meals. Discovered they forgot to put our soup in the bag when we got home. Opened the salads and found them brown and not fresh. In fairness the steak and rice dinner was good but it was definitely not worth what we paid considering missing food and salads were unappealing and went in the trash. Additionally, the attitude of the new staff when we arrived to pickup the food was exceptionally poor. Definitely not authentic Japanese experience there any longer and very disppointed that the new ownership is definitely not focused on customer service and food quality. It's a shame this place was sold as it used to be one of our favorites.

Editing after coming back- service was not much better. They decided the day before to close at 8 now but the only thing we were told was that the hibachi side was closed when we got there at 7:50. We would have gone elsewhere if we were informed of the brand new hours (and no signage on the door). Our food was over salted, the point of not being able to eat even half of it. Not sure if Sumos will survive the changes

We used to come often while Ms. Lee was the owner and loved it. This new owner should be absolutely ashamed. We waited 40 minutes for a table and were sat with 3 young ladies. No one knew who our server was, it took 20 minutes for one (who was absolutely doing her best, and did great) came to start our orders. The two tables next to us were sat down a could 5-10 minutes after us were served first, got their food first, and one left just as our chef started. We sat for over an hour before getting a chef , there was absolutely no warning of how long it would be. One of the girls at our table had wanted no vegetables and didn’t realize she had to specify extra rice, and got an attitude from the manager when she said something afterwards. The server wanted to discount our meal and the “manager” discounted it…5% and when my mother in law asked because not every check was discounted. She sat there and argued with my mother in law, talked down to her, and made it official that we will not come back. If that is how your manager is going to, you will run a business to the ground. We were there for just under 3 hours, with no warning other than the possible hour wait for a table. 3 hours wasted with a young toddler. I won’t be shocked if this restaurant doesn’t sink by the end of the year. Yall couldn’t handle being busy and started turning people away over 2 hours before closing.

Edit since I can’t reply to their response- We did not have a party of 10. We had 5 adults and a 1 year old who ate off my plate. We were sat with 3 college students who were lovely and just as frustrated by the end. There were multiple parties with 6 or more adults. The slowness of service had nothing to do with how many of us there were in my opinion. Your host staff made our party large by sitting two groups with each other. Which was fine, we just wanted to fed in a timely manner and not 2 hours after getting seated. The fact that you try to blame your efficiency on party size is laughable. It would not have mattered how many of us were sitting there, we still would have been ignored for a hot minute, while the two tables who had the same number of people at each mind you, would still have been served way before us. You know the two tables who sat down after us, not before or even at...

This was a first time experience and I do understand that some of the reason for my review was not the fault of the facility and that was only the fact that the online system did not put a cap on the reservations.* But it was our 15th wedding anniversary (2/15) and wanted to do something special with our children. We did not mind the wait at the door but once sat it was awful. Not to mention there was not a manager in site (or made themselves known to be in the building) to direct the chaos and check on guest. (Yes, ive been a manager and worked in food/customer service for many years). We were sat at a back table with 2 other families and it seemed none of the servers wanted to pick up the table even with them ALL continously walking by or at the back counter for other guests. We sat at our table for 20 mins before the hostess took a drink order and then shortly after took our food order. We watched a table next to us be cleaned, sat, and served with 2 chefs at that table (sat 30 mins after us) before we even received our salads. When a server brought our salads she started with "yall have to tell me what yall had"....no name...no hello...no courtesy...Needless to say....one family at a time we started to leave because we were done our drinks and still no chef. We got there at 650 for a 7pm reservation, sat at 755, drinks at 830 and left at 9pm with hungry children and still no true acknowledgement that customers were not being served. Shout out to the hostess (red hair beauty!) for trying to comfort us but in reality she went above and beyond regardless of what the building was doing. So thank you to her! But unfortunately after living here for 12 years and never visiting the restaurant until now...I see I have not missed anything and will most likely not try again. I hope this helps fill in some gray spaces for customers and the...

We decided to go for a birthday celebration to this location after several months of not visiting this place, we were asked to wait until all of the members of our party had arrived. When everyone was finally there, we let the hostess know and she had told us that it would be a few minutes. We were seating inside on one the big circular booths, with the conversation, the time went by, but we noticed that 2 numerous party's that arrived after us were seated first, we ad about the same number of people, we asked the hostess and yet again just told us that it would be a few minutes, at that point we asked to speak to a manager. little we knew about how nasty old lady that runs the place is, maybe she owns it. regardless we asked why there were people that arrived after us were seated first at that point we had been waiting 45, minutes she replied walking away with a nasty attitude claiming it had not been that long, she grabbed some menus and put us on a table and I once again asked her why we were not seated as we had arrived first, the ill-mannered nasty old lady, that is also mentally unstable replied with a sushhh putting her finger in her mouth telling me to shup up. at that point i was not willing to take her nasty attitude and spend hard earned dollars and being treated with shuch demeanor and told her she should be the one to shut up, she instantly pointed the door and kicked out. talk about unprofessional management, treating people like they are less than human, we left to never came back, she needs to understand how to treat people and customers in general, she eats from them and no need to be present on a business with that miserable attitude around. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON THIS PLACE, THEY ARE...
