LuAnn's Bakery & Cafe — Restaurant in Ellington

I would like to start this review by saying that I love Luann’s. They have a wonderful and welcoming staff and a charming facility. I enjoy their lunch offerings and have posted positive support for their ever expanding gluten free offerings. Why I simply cannot provide a 5 star review is from their breakfast offerings. My companion and I decided to stop at LuAnns for a dine-in breakfast this morning. We spent $27.95 on two cups of coffee, a wrap and a GF egg and cheese sandwich. Fine - the bread is an extra expense (GF) and my spouse had sausage on his wrap. The breakfast was brought to our table - just two little sandwiches on two tiny plates. No color or variety on the plate. “Overpriced and underwhelmed” is what my spouse said. If you take each item that was served (2 types of bread, two eggs, two coffees, two cheese options and one meat) that is 9 items at a hair over $3.10 per item. And we had to buss out own tables. There appeared to be a loud staff meeting on the main dining area and when you put it all together - there is no value here other than supporting a local business. If LuAnns offered a small side dish alongside the breakfast - fruit, or some potatoes - it would feel like money well spent. For $27.95 I could have a weeks worth of breakfast at home in my quiet dining room at home. I would challenge the team to fire up this breakfast order and look at it on the table with a critical eye and find the value to their customer. I do think LuAnns lunches are really well done. We wish we could give them 6 out of 5 stars! When we lived in northern CT LuAnn's was a local favorite spot for my now husband and I, but since moving to more central CT, we haven't been able to treat ourselves as regularly to their delicious bakery items and wide varieties of cafe style drinks in front of their cozy fireplace! So when we got married at the beginning of September this year, we already knew we wanted to hire LuAnn's as one of our vendors!

Even though we had lots of rain on our wedding day, Luann's brightened our special day with their delicious gluten free cupcakes delivered in Cooper, their 1970s Volkswagen beetle parked outside our venue! Josh arrived early and the line to get a cupcake was buzzing with excitement, with each friend and family member excited about what cupcake to choose! We printed a sign displaying the flavors we had selected (3 chocolate and 5 vanilla based flavors from a 3 page list) so everyone knew their options but all choices were superb! The cupcakes were perfectly displayed against the vibrant green color of the vintage car with the trunk popped open, with Josh engaging with our guests the entire time!

While we know a cake cutting is a traditional staple for weddings, we wanted something different and we could not recommend LuAnn's more! Please, if you are near the Ellington area and looking for quality made food and drinks, stop in to Luann's! For the month of November I am writing a reason to find gratitude in living every single day. One of those days this month Luann's became my reason for gratitude. ...A special memory being made with my hubby, ...a break from Reality inspired by Spiced Hot Apple Cider, a pecan cinnamon roll, Pie-Caken, gentle music, soft fireplace flames.

The pecan roll melted in our mouths with just enough sweet stickiness, covered in soft pecan bits - OH, YUM YUM YUM YUM!!!!

With a name like Pie-Caken, we HAD to give the apple crumb pie, baked inside a vanilla cake, slathered with cinnamon butter cream frosting, a try. OH MY WONDERFULNESS!!!!!!! Talk about something to be Grateful for! This AMAZING TASTE SENSATION WAS PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!

The half an hour of comfortably sitting in this wonderful little Bakery and Cafe was almost like driving up to Vermont. Luann's Bakery & Cafe always reminds me of the kind of homey, Vermonty, speciality, locally sourced, wonderful little shops and eateries that our son and daughter-in-law have always treated us to when we go up to NEARLY CANADA, VERMONT for a visit. For a little while we TOOK a break and it felt like the kind of treat that we only do if ON VACATION. I am THANKFUL that today we realized that we don't - NO, WE SHOULDN'T- wait for a special occasion to JUST TREAT OURSELVES as if we are in a SPECIAL PLACE.... and Luann's is just the perfect kind of place to get that getaway feeling.
