Mr Bagel & Deli — Restaurant in Elmwood Park

HYGIENE! HYGIENE! HYGIENE! I went to this bagel shop for a bagel with cream cheese. Upon entering, I saw an older gentleman mopping the floor with gloves on. He put the mop down and came to the counter where I was ordering an everything bagel toasted with cream cheese. While I was ordering, he was wiping his gloves with a rag, which I assume was soaked with mop water, before handling my bagel. I asked him to please change his gloves, but he just dropped the bagel back into the bin, laughed condescendingly, and said, "okay??" He then only changed one glove, grabbed my bagel, and handed it to the other staff member to prepare.The woman who made my bagel also had poor customer service. When I asked what time the grill closed, she rolled her eyes and said they close at 3. When I asked again for the grill shutdown time, she vaguely mentioned around 2:30 or 2:15. So, I’m a bit late posting this review, because I ordered from them a couple weeks back , but the quality, taste and service was so great and memorable I had to make sure I made it known what a really great establishment this place is. I live in paterson so I don’t have many quality options when it comes to bagels and sandwiches. I called and ordered with a gentleman named Emre( I hope I spelled that right) and he was so nice and helpful and pleasant that I would return solely based on that. I ordered a bagel with lox and scallion cream cheese and it was perfect ! Fresh soft bagel and fresh lox just made it so delicious. I also ordered a reuben and it was really such good quality perfectly seasoned and sliced pastrami and it was just the right portion size as I don’t like pastrami sandwiches with exaggerated big portions of meat . This place has terrible hygiene policies. While I was waiting for my bacon egg and cheese being cooked by one of the women there. some older dude came out with an overfilled plate/tray of raw bacon. His hands were all over the raw bacon trying to make sure it didn’t fall off.

He then took over cooking for the woman without changing gloves or washing hands.

He finished cooking, put the food on the roll, then grabbed the roll to put it the sandwich together with the same hands. Have these people never heard of cross contamination?

Update: The owner just responded. They say they “can’t find a record of my visit” lol… what deli keeps a record of peoples visits? What an absurd comment to make. Hey dude, how about you learn hygiene practices that we teach...
