edit: at home with diarrhoea (& this was the only thing i ate today)0 stars not great, don't recommend, won't be back (should have gone to happy cow a block away for their breakfast bowl with sweet potato fries, or hideaway , but i wanted to give this place a chance) I give 2 out of 5 for many reasons. 1st, the bad : I ordered huevos rancheros with over easy eggs. I eat eggs EVERY day & almost always over easy ...& I've been around almost 6decades… I know how they're cooked; I usually cook them. I've also ordered them at a LOT of restaurants in the many decades have been alive. When I cut into my egg, just the white part, a gush of clear uncooked runny whites ran out; a LOT of the egg white was raw and uncooked The other one had only slightly uncooked whites, which I would not have said anything about. but the uncooked one was really potentially dangerous , especially as they are using cheap conventional eggs -which have a higher risk of salmonella my main criticism is : when I brought this up to the man working there, he told me that's how they make their over easy eggs. after telling me "that's just sour cream" 🙄 He did not see the uncooked clear runny white run out & fall to the bottom under the tortilla He just automatically told me that I was wrong & mansplained to me how over easy eggs are meant to be. as I said I'm an older person who has over easy eggs almost every day. I've even worked at brunch restaurants I know, apparently more than this guy, how over easy eggs are made & meant to be. if they really leave the white THAT runny/raw then… Well if you get sick it's probably that ... also they would be shut down by a health inspector. when a customer tries to tell you it's that bad, don't give them excuses or reasons & assume that they're just wrong, LISTEN to them. (this guy didn't even look very closely, & like I mentioned he didn't see the liquid that ran off underneath) So after the guy argued with me & gaslit & mansplained to me , he did agree to take them back & make me a new dish. It was embarrassing & annoying, I probably should've left… In case the kitchen was also pissed & spit in my food or something I stayed, hoping that they wouldn't dare The other criticisms I have are: there was very little flavour on this huevos rancheros. there were big chunks of canned tomato that just tasted like plain stewed tomatoes from a can on top & black beans which also tasted plain & like they were just from a can with no spices. They did give me a green salsa they make which was very good & added flavor. I ordered a side of chorizo to add more flavour & protein & it was bland, not spicy or all like I have ever tasted chorizo before; which I buy it quite regularly & love it usually. It was very greasy & they charged almost 6 bucks for a side of chorizo The last criticism i have is that they charge too much for cheap diner coffee. I understand the efficiency of bringing people a whole pot of coffee. you don't have to go back & give them fresh coffee a bunch , ...check on them . but I don't drink very much coffee & I want fresh coffee only. if you bring me a whole pot, in 20 minutes when I'm ready for another cup I don't want this 30 minute old coffee from the pot that you put on my table. I would prefer if I got the pot you just made because you served everyone else & it's fresh cuz u had to make more. I assume the almost $4 for a cup of coffee that is subpar is charged because of this seeming generosity of giving them a whole pot. Maybe you should reserve the whole pot, & the charge for a table of more than 1. or gave a ONE cup option The good about the restaurant : the servers were very attentive.a little too attentive sometimes but overall very good. The bathroom was pretty clean; the door was sticky tho. (pic is of second plate with eggs cooked right...if a lil over medium) o' the home fries were good but the menu's need cleaned...EVERY DAY

I went this weekend 8/16 for a nice breakfast outing. South Hills Cafe is a Eugene gem; it just opened this spring and is one of those places that becomes an instant classic. The menu has all sorts of breakfast comfort food like omelettes and pancakes as well as some house specialties that I found amazing. The chilaquiles were completely perfect with a sauce that was mildly spicy and had a depth of flavor that makes each successive bite a little more complex and delicious. The Eggs Benedict was also good with a great hollandaise and served hashbrowns that were crispy and delicious. They bring you a coffee pot full of some really great coffee and you can just relax while enjoying the great food and enjoying the atmosphere. There is so much light coming in the huge windows and making you feel welcome and peaceful. Everyone there is very kind and make dining there a great experience. I definitely recommend experiencing the unique take on breakfast they have here.

Always loved the location, used to come here in middle and high school when a different family ran another restaurant here, the new family clearly loves the place and puts a lot of care into what they do. Nice mix of classic American breakfast food, and options for sandwiches and Burritos. They have breakfast combos for ~$10 which is always appreciated. It's not bougie or overpriced. It has the vibe of a small town middle American diner and I love that. Meal in picture was $22 but you can get it down to $20 if you get a cup of fruit instead of a bowl. Chicken Fried Steak with eggs over easy, sourdough toast, coffee and added the fruit side because I pulled an all nighter and skipped breakfast. 🙃

I give 2 out of 5 for many reasons.

I really wanted to give this place more than three stars but I just can't justify it. After about a 25 minute wait, due to the eclipse going on, we received a table. The wait was expected with all the folks coming down to see the eclipse, so that isn't really an issue, especially in a popular place like Eugene when it comes to food and it being a college town.

The issue was the wait times after ordering our food and the service there of. While our server claimed she put our order in 7 minutes after another table that had sat down after the two of us, it took about 35 to 40 minutes to get our food out to us, and we had already drank our entire espresso 20 minutes prior, to the point where it was cold and we were left with the water that was originally given to us. I grumbly inquired about how long it would be for our food to be out, to which our food was brought out right I asked, to which I apologized for my grumpiness.

The food that arrived was all right, but it isn't anything that I would necessarily call home about. Most of the food seems to be cooked from frozen instead of fresh, and the portion sizes are just a little bit on the smaller side. I ordered an extra side of sausage because I can tell from the photos on Google that I wasn't going to get enough to eat.

The part that really made me annoyed was that there was about five tables around us that have been waiting just as long as mine, and when it came time to pay the bill the server only gave one table a 25% discount off of their bill, and made the rest of us pay full price. The only reason I know this is because I was standing behind three of them while we were checking out and she very loudly expressed her apologies for the wait time to this one specific table and told them about the discount she applied but then the rest of us she just made us pay full price which I found to be, while not necessarily unfair, a little bit nitpicky on who the better customer service goes to over others, when it's more of a broad brush issue on wait times, when she's apologizing to all of the tables about why it's taking so long to get food out of the kitchen. The icing on the cake for me was that I was charged .95 cents for a flavor added to my latte, which to me is kind of ridiculous when it's all mostly artificial anyways.

I can't in good conscience recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a quality meal and good customer service based on my experience, and I would recommend other breakfast/lunch cafes in the area over this one.

I don't believe we'll...

Maybe it was on off day. We ate here based on reviews, and were disappointed. It definitely has potential to be awesome though. All the staff was very friendly And welcoming. Lovely crew. The organization for seating waiting customers is a bit disorganized. We only saw our waiter 3 times. To take our drink order, bring our drinks and take food order and then to drop off food. No check in for refills or additional items that might be needed. Not even to bring our check. This is why we scored down on service. But they get 5 stars for being very friendly when interacting with customers. We ordered the biscuits and gravy and a pancake. All the food was close to being cold, like it had been sitting for awhile. The pancake was tough, like it was over mixed. The flavor of food was delicious, just not hot off the stove, at all. Coffee was fresh and hot and that was a plus for us. Noticed that having to order sides with a lot of meals, which drive up the overall cost, because meals didn’t include hash browns, toast, and items we are used to seeing be included in breakfast meals. It was about $40 plus tip for the two of us. We would be willing to give it another try next time we are in town because we did see and taste the potential and think it maybe have been an...
