Oh my goodness - what a throw back to the better days when “eating small and local” was a treat! The welcome was sincere - their story - “been around quite awhile”. The Burgers and Hand Cut Fries - rival the best. Stop in and relish in the old school charm. And don’t forget the Fry Sauce! Yum! These Texans loved the charm on our way to Wyoming Downs! Got to appreciate Google that now allows these little places to be finally discovered and pretty certain they appreciate it too - whether they know it or or not.

This was a very unique experience. The employees there were all older and very nice. They touted the hand cut homemade fries and homemade sandwich bread. I ordered a cheeseburger combo, the special for the day. The hamburger was extremely disappointing as the patty was as processed and thin as you could get. I agree though, the fries were good. Not sure I would go back, but a good memory of the visit. The place was a little run down, but clean.

This is a family run place and it's a lot of fun. The staff are all fun to talk to with good sense of humor. The food was tasty they were more than willing to customize their menu items to match the things I wanted to eat. it was clean. I don't know how long this place has been here but it seemed to be for quite a long time. I would eat here again the next time I am in the city.

I've been going to Mother Mae's since I was a kid. First and foremost their sub sandwiches are by far the best subs I've ever had. They have a homemade bread recipe they use and it is excellent. The food is always fresh tasting and delicious. Sometimes it takes them a bit of time to bring it to you, but it's worth the wait! Also the food is a bit on the pricey side for this type of food, but the serving size is large, and the quality is excellent. To me, it's well worth it.

Their subs are my favorite and are what really sets this restaurant apart. But their burgers are good too. I love their fries.

The couple that runs the restaurant are some of the best people you'll ever meet. They've done a lot over the years to make Evanston a better place, and have built a fun little community around their restaurant.

The building that the restaurant is in is showing its age a bit, and could probably use a face lift. But they keep it clean, and in some ways this adds to the hometown feel of the restaurant.

Whenever someone I know visits Evanston, Mother Mae's is always the first place I recommend for them to eat. I can't recommend them...

We were looking for lunch on our way home from a great vacation. We always like to eat at non chain, mom and pop places. I’m glad I had read the reviews because other wise we would have kept walking. An adorable elderly couple run the place. The gentleman told us all about their menu and what they are known for. Based on that info my husband ordered a sandwich on their freshly baked wheat roll. It was gigantic and had lots of yummy (optional) ingredients. I ordered the chili dog and fries. The potatoes are prepared by hand and fries to order. They were delicious as was the dipping sauce. The chili was really good and it went well with the hotdog. It may look like a dive, but the food and the owners are well...

The best part: the owners are the epitomy of Family Friendly. I watched as a young kid played the unusual gumball pinball machine (you get both a gumball and it is the ball for a pinball play!)... The owner gave hints... And when the kid wanted another play but had no quarters, the owner took care of it 🤗

I wish we had tried a sandwich/sub with their homemade bread. The burgers were disappointing, due to the small size and slightly stale commercial buns. But the lettuce, pickles and tomato were 100% great!

The hand-cut fries are great, as long as you like non-crispy fries.

All in all, a very pleasant ...
